On March 17, 2025, President Donald Trump announced that he was revoking the Secret Service protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden, the children of President Joe Biden. Despite Joe Biden providing Secret Service details to his children before leaving office, Trump took to social media to state that he would end the protection early.
Trump criticized the extended protection, claiming that Hunter’s security detail, consisting of 18 agents, was unnecessary and a waste of taxpayer money. He specifically pointed out that Hunter Biden’s security detail was currently accompanying him on a trip to South Africa. Similarly, Trump mentioned that 13 agents had been assigned to protect Ashley Biden but stated that he would also terminate her security.
This move comes in stark contrast to the protection granted to Trump’s children after his own first term. In 2021, when Trump left office, he ensured that his own children received Secret Service protection for six months, a decision Biden did not contest.
This announcement by Trump has sparked debate over the allocation of Secret Service resources and the ongoing protection of the adult children of sitting presidents.
