JUST IN: FG Freezes New Federal Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges for Seven Years

The Federal Government has placed a seven-year ban on establishing new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, in what it describes as a bold move to tackle falling standards and crumbling infrastructure in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the moratorium on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Alausa said the suspension — which covers all categories of federal tertiary institutions — will curb duplication, eliminate waste, and allow government to concentrate resources on rehabilitating facilities, improving manpower, and expanding capacity in existing schools. “Access to tertiary education is no longer Nigeria’s problem. WAEC Revises SSCE Results, 62.9% Achieve Passes in English and Mathematics

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has admitted errors in the results released early in the week with respect to this year’s Senior Secondary School Examination, SSCE, saying 1,239,884 candidates now have credit passes in five subjects or more, including  English Language and Mathematics.The new figure represents 62.9% of the 1,969,313 candidates who took the examination.Additionally, the new figure is significantly better than the initial figure of 754,545, representing 38.32% of the number of candidates who were said to have credit passes in five or more subjects, including English and Mathematics, in the previously announced results.Briefing the press in Lagos on Friday evening, the Head of the National Office of WAEC, Dr. Amos Dangut, admitted to some lapses on the part of the Council, especially regarding the serialized questions in objective papers of certain subjects.“Gentlemen of the media, with deep […]
