The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu, at his palace in Lagos. The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with traditional institutions to enhance security and support ongoing military operations nationwide.
In a statement by Army authorities, General Shaibu thanked the Oba and other traditional leaders in Lagos for their consistent support to the Nigerian Army. He said their influence, guidance and cooperation remain vital to maintaining peace, stability and public confidence in security agencies.
The army chief explained that his visit was both to express gratitude and to seek royal blessings for troops deployed in various theatres of operation. He stressed that Nigeria’s cultural heritage and traditional structures are central to resolving conflicts, promoting dialogue and building national unity.
General Shaibu commended Oba Akiolu for his constant encouragement and assistance to army formations and institutions within Lagos State. He noted that the monarch’s counsel and moral support have helped to improve civil–military relations and boost the morale of personnel carrying out difficult assignments.
The COAS reiterated the army’s commitment to professionalism, discipline and respect for the rule of law in all operations. He assured the monarch that the Nigerian Army will continue to protect citizens, defend the country’s territorial integrity and work closely with communities to address security challenges.
In his response, Oba Akiolu praised the Nigerian Army for its role in protecting lives and preserving national unity. He described the military as a key pillar of stability and urged officers and soldiers to remain focused, patriotic and God-fearing in the discharge of their duties.
The monarch lauded General Shaibu’s leadership and expressed confidence in his efforts to promote a safer and more secure Nigeria. He offered special prayers for peace in the country, for the success of military operations and for the protection of all personnel on the frontlines.
Senior army officers and palace chiefs were present during the visit, which highlighted the importance of closer engagement between security agencies and traditional authorities. The interaction also reinforced the view that community support and traditional structures are essential for effective conflict resolution and long-term national cohesion.
