In Chicago’s South Side, residents say their battle is not just against crime, but for the future of their youth.
Driving through neighborhoods marked by high violence, we stopped in Bronzeville at the site of a drive-by shooting last weekend that left seven people wounded. The attack happened just a block away from Chicago Police Headquarters. It was one of many incidents over the Labor Day weekend, during which at least 58 people were shot and eight killed across the city.
Rob White, a community coach working with young men trying to leave gang life, said the violence is crushing for residents. “You can imagine how people feel with this happening right under the shadow of a giant police building,” he told us.
President Donald Trump has vowed to send National Guard troops into another US city to tackle violent crime, though he has not said where.
But community leaders here push back on the idea that federal troops are the solution. Kanoya Ali, who works alongside White, argued that change is already underway. “The outcome is already happening,” he said. “The troops are already here. We are the troops.”
