The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, have urged troops of Operation Fansan Yamma in the North West to maintain high vigilance during the festive season. They warned that criminal groups often try to exploit holidays to undermine security.
Both Service Chiefs gave the charge during an operational visit to the Joint Task Force headquarters, where they celebrated Christmas with the troops. Their visit came as Nigeria and the United States continue joint airstrikes against terrorists in the region.
According to Army spokesperson Colonel Apollonia Anele, the visit aimed to boost morale, appreciate the troops’ sacrifices and reinforce strategic directives for ongoing operations. The CDS told soldiers to remain alert, proactive and disciplined, to follow rules of engagement and to respect human rights, urging them not to be misled by propaganda.
General Oluyede passed on Christmas greetings and praised the troops for their courage and commitment at a time when many Nigerians were with their families. He described them as “the wall that never breaks and the hope that can never be shattered,” and commended their role in restoring confidence and stabilising the North West and nearby states.
He called for continued cooperation with other security agencies, federal and state authorities and local communities to consolidate peace. The CDS also assured soldiers that their welfare remains a priority, pledging improvements in living conditions, healthcare and support for their families.
General Shaibu, on his part, urged troops to remain security conscious and uphold the highest standards of conduct. He said the Christmas luncheon held with them was part of a long standing tradition to recognise the sacrifices, resilience and professionalism of personnel in the field.
He noted that similar celebrations were taking place across other operational theatres in the country. The COAS said the season is a time for reflection, thanksgiving and remembrance of fallen heroes whose sacrifices have made Nigeria safer.
Shaibu promised that the Army will continue to honour its fallen personnel by supporting their families and preserving their legacy. He restated his command philosophy of transforming the Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat ready and resilient force, with strong focus on welfare, rewards for excellence and operational readiness.
The COAS encouraged troops to celebrate responsibly, stay alert and maintain good conduct, conveying the appreciation of the President and well meaning Nigerians for their service. Both Service Chiefs reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting Nigeria’s peace, unity and democratic stability, while wishing the troops a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2026.
