The Princess of Wales and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, shared a special musical moment this Christmas by performing a piano duet for a festive carol service.
Although they did not appear live at the Together at Christmas concert held earlier this month at Westminster Abbey, their performance was recorded in advance at Windsor Castle. The duet was broadcast on Christmas Eve as part of ITV1’s coverage of the annual event.
The piece performed, Holm Sound by Scottish composer Erland Cooper, is understood to be familiar to both mother and daughter and one they often enjoy playing together in private. During the recording, filmed in the Inner Hall at Windsor Castle, Catherine played the piano with her left hand, while Princess Charlotte accompanied her using only her right.
Kensington Palace had hinted at the collaboration ahead of the broadcast, releasing a short teaser showing the Princess of Wales playing alongside an unidentified partner, described only as “a special duet”.
As the music played, viewers were shown scenes of guests arriving at Westminster Abbey, including moments of the Prince and Princess of Wales watching their children take part in pre-service activities, such as decorating a “connection tree” with paper chains bearing their names.
The performance was accompanied by a reflective narration from Catherine, who spoke about the meaning of Christmas as a time defined by quiet acts of kindness rather than grand gestures. She highlighted simple moments of care, presence and compassion as the foundation of human connection.
Music has been a recurring feature of the Princess of Wales’s involvement in the carol service. At the first event in 2021, she surprised audiences by playing the piano alongside singer-songwriter Tom Walker during a live performance.
Organisers explained that this year’s theme focused on love and togetherness, aiming to recognise individuals who contribute positively to society. The inclusion of the duet was intended to underline the importance of human connection in a world that can often feel divided.
In a personal message included in the order of service, Catherine praised those who give their time and compassion quietly, noting the profound impact such efforts have on the lives of others.
The service welcomed around 1,600 guests, including members of the Royal Family, public figures and community representatives. Readings were delivered by actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor, while musical performances blended traditional and contemporary styles. The Prince of Wales delivered a Bible reading, and Princess Charlotte attended alongside her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis.
