Real Madrid’s Uphill Battle to Defend La Liga Title

Article arrow_drop_down

After suffering crushing defeats in the Champions League against Arsenal and in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, Real Madrid now face a crucial test as they aim to keep their La Liga title hopes alive. On Sunday, Carlo Ancelotti’s men host Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu, knowing that every point is vital in their pursuit of league leaders Barcelona , who currently sit four points ahead.

Despite the bruising fallout from the Copa del Rey final, including disciplinary issues and mounting injuries, Real Madrid remain determined to stay in the title race. The stakes are high, with a pivotal clash against Barcelona looming on the horizon.

Injury Woes and Defensive Struggles

Real Madrid’s defensive woes have been exacerbated by injuries and suspensions. Defender Antonio Rudiger was handed a six-match ban for throwing an object at the referee during the Copa del Rey final and has since opted for knee surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Adding to the injury list, Ferland Mendy and David Alaba have also been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, joining long-term absentees Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao on the sidelines.

Madrid’s defense, already a weak point this season, is now in tatters. With Celta Vigo , a team fighting for European qualification, visiting the Bernabeu, Carlo Ancelotti will need his remaining squad to step up.

Ancelotti’s Resolve Amid Challenges

Despite the setbacks, coach Carlo Ancelotti , who is set to leave the club at the end of the season, remains optimistic about Real Madrid’s chances of defending their La Liga crown.

“We have time to prepare the games against Celta and Barcelona, we have to continue competing until the end,” Ancelotti insisted.

Real Madrid had a week to rest and recover after the Copa del Rey final defeat, and Ancelotti emphasized the importance of staying focused for the upcoming matches.

The Road Ahead: Celta Vigo and Barcelona

Sunday’s match against Celta Vigo is a must-win for Madrid as they look to close the gap on Barcelona before their direct showdown at the Olympic Stadium. Barcelona, meanwhile, face Real Valladolid on Saturday, giving them a chance to extend their lead before Madrid’s game.

The reverse fixture between Madrid and Celta earlier this season was controversial, with Celta striker Iago Aspas lamenting a missed penalty call.

“All of Spain saw it,” Aspas said this week, ahead of his team’s return to the Bernabeu. Despite Madrid’s struggles, Aspas acknowledged that no team can be counted out in football.

“In football, you can never rule out anything, sometimes it seems a team might lose but then they win,” Aspas added. “We’ll try to be the protagonists, have the ball, attack… and after that, it could go well or not for us.”

Key Player to Watch: Ayoze Perez

While all eyes will be on Madrid and Barcelona, Villarreal’s Ayoze Perez is making headlines in his own right. The Spanish forward is chasing the top scorer title in La Liga, sitting just one goal behind Athletic Bilbao’s Oihan Sancet , who is currently sidelined with an injury.

Perez could add to his tally when Villarreal host Osasuna on Saturday, boosting his chances of finishing as the top Spanish scorer this season.

ECG Explains Power Outages in Greater Accra and Western Regions Following Technical Faults

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed ongoing power interruptions in parts of the Greater Accra and Western regions to separate technical faults affecting its distribution network. The affected communities include Hebron, Medie, Samsam, Satellite, Koleman and nearby areas, where residents have been experiencing intermittent power outages. According to ECG, engineering teams have been deployed to the station and are actively working to identify and rectify the fault to restore stable electricity supply as quickly as possible. Former Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim emerges as leading AC Milan candidate

Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly in contention for the managerial position at AC Milan after the dismissal of Max Allegri following a disappointing conclusion to their Serie A campaign. Amorim's tenure at Manchester United came to an end in January, marking a lackluster period at Old Trafford. Having been without a managerial role for the past six months, Amorim now has a chance to take the helm at one of Europe's most prestigious clubs. AC Milan is actively seeking a new coach and is set to reach out to various candidates after parting ways with Allegri once the Serie A season concluded. In addition to Amorim, AC Milan's management is also considering Oliver Glasner, another manager currently without a position, who has a provisional two-year contract offer on the table. Folarin Balogun scores brace as USA thrash Paraguay 4-1

United States striker Folarin Balogun scored two goals to help the U.S. men's national team beat Paraguay 4-1 in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Inglewood, California. This was Balogun's World Cup debut in what Mauricio Pochettino's enthusiastic squad call a "dreamy night" for the striker. Balogun became the first U.S. men's national team player to score two goals in a World Cup game since the inaugural tournament in 1930. The Americans took the lead early in the seventh minute due to an own goal from Paraguay's Damián Bobadilla, then extended their advantage with Balogun's strikes in the 31st minute and in first-half stoppage time to end the first half with a commanding three-goal advantage. Balogun netted his first goal in the 31st minute as Christian Pulisic's deflected centering feed sat up perfectly for him to […]

An unusual World Cup marked by hostile reception for fans and teams

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, has been described as unusual and hostile, with passionate football fans facing visa barriers, inflated prices and poor facilities across the three host nations. Group-stage ticket prices have already been called "unusual and inflated" by supporters, while fans complain that the passionate supporters should not be cut off from the World Cup because of money. Stadiums have appeared empty at times, training pitches are poor, and airports have been described as obstacles rather than welcoming entry points for international visitors. Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa expressed frustration, saying "If the stadiums are empty, the training pitches are poor, and even the airports feel like obstacles, then what are we really celebrating?" Instead of discussing superstars and football teams, the focus has shifted to poor facilities, organization and […]

Abubakar tried to secure M.K.O. Abiola’s release before his death

Former Nigerian President Abdulsalami Abubakar has revealed that he actively tried to secure the release of pro-democracy leader M.K.O. Abiola before Abiola's sudden death in detention on July 7, 1998. Abiola was the apparent winner of Nigeria's June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was later annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. He was arrested and held in detention for more than four years by the military government of General Sani Abacha. According to a new book by Abdulsalami Abubakar, American officials who were with Abiola when he died were initially denied access to him before being allowed to meet with him. On July 7, 1998, just days before Abiola's scheduled release from prison, he collapsed during a meeting with a U.S. delegation and died in a medical center. Various theories emerged after Abiola's death, including claims that […]

Bandits flaunt cash online using TikTok livestreams and giveaways

Armed bandits and criminal hoodlums in Nigeria are increasingly using social media platforms, especially TikTok, to flaunt cash, hold livestreams, and fund giveaways to attract attention and build online followings. These bandits run regular livestreams on TikTok, where they encourage viewers to join giveaways, follow their accounts, and engage with their content. Some of them have become known online for their flamboyant displays of wealth, even as they remain linked to kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes.
