Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), says the military officers detained over the recent alleged coup plot were fully aware of the gravity of their actions before moving against the government.
Speaking in an interview with Turkish public broadcaster TRT, Musa said the suspects “must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” insisting they are prepared to “face the wrath” if found guilty. His comments followed complaints from some relatives who alleged witch hunt in the arrests.
The Defence Headquarters had earlier confirmed that investigations conducted under military procedures uncovered involvement of some personnel in an alleged plot to overthrow the government. It said those found culpable would be arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and service regulations.
Musa assured that the officers will face a court martial that will be free and fair, with full rights to legal representation. He stressed that due process will be followed and that the proceedings are aimed at preserving discipline and professional standards in the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Musa noted that government is ensuring the welfare of the suspects’ families. According to him, their wives and children are being looked after and “are not left alone,” even as the trial processes move forward.
Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Samaila Uba, said the investigation was comprehensive and carried out in strict accordance with military rules. He explained that the probe identified a number of officers allegedly involved in plans “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards” of the armed forces.
Uba stressed that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and form part of internal mechanisms to maintain order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks. He reiterated that the armed forces remain committed to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.
