Banditry displaces over 500,000 residents in Niger, says Bago

Article arrow_drop_down

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago says more than 500,000 people have been displaced from Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State due to persistent bandit attacks.
He disclosed this during a presidential relief initiative in Borgu, where food items, nutrition packs and essential drugs were distributed to affected residents.

According to Bago, the displaced residents are mostly indigenes of Borgu who have fled repeated raids, kidnappings and killings by armed groups.
They are now scattered across Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory and even neighbouring Benin Republic.

The governor said the Niger State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government and development partners, is fast tracking plans for their safe return and resettlement.
He described the current efforts as “frantic”, noting that restoring normal life and livelihoods in Borgu is a top priority.

Bago revealed that President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to clear and secure the Borgu National Park, which bandits have used as a base.
The plan includes establishing permanent forward operating bases in and around the park to block the movement of criminal gangs.

The governor appealed to displaced persons and host communities to remain patient, stressing that the food and medical supplies being shared show that government has not forgotten them.
He assured them that more support and security operations are on the way to make their eventual return safe and sustainable.

Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, praised Bago’s commitment to his people and efforts to draw federal attention to the crisis.
He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and maintain calm as authorities work to restore peace.

Security experts say Niger State has become one of the worst hit by banditry, with organised groups attacking villages, destroying farms and cutting people off from their sources of income.
They warn that without sustained security operations and economic support, displacement and poverty could deepen across the affected areas.

Middle East crisis: NLC demands COLA, wage award, tax relief

The Nigeria Labour Congress has asked the Federal Government to introduce immediate measures such as cost of living allowance, wage awards and tax relief to cushion the impact of the ongoing Middle East crisis on Nigerian workers. The union said rising global tensions have worsened fuel prices, transport costs and inflation, deepening hardship for salaries that were already inadequate. NLC President Joe Ajaero noted that workers were struggling even before the latest spike in energy costs and warned that many households can no longer cope without urgent support. He explained that the current N70,000 minimum wage has been overtaken by inflation and does not reflect the real cost of food, transport, housing and basic services. The NLC is therefore pushing for a cost of living allowance to be paid on top of existing wages so that workers can absorb sudden price shocks.Ajaero […]

Fuel price hike: Presidency faults Obi on strategic reserve proposal

The Presidency has rejected claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that Nigeria’s rising fuel prices are mainly due to a lack of strategic petroleum reserves. It said Obi’s comments oversimplify a complex problem and ignore the deeper structural challenges that have long affected the country’s energy sector. In a statement shared on social media, presidential aide Dada Olusegun argued that recent increases in petrol prices are largely driven by global market forces, not the absence of strategic reserves. He noted that many advanced economies with large reserves still experience price swings because reserves are not used simply to stop normal market movements. Olusegun stressed that Nigeria’s main problem lies in decades of low refining capacity, heavy dependence on imported petrol, and pressure on the foreign exchange market. He said these long term issues make the country highly vulnerable whenever international […]
