Joke Silva Urges Action to Restore Tinapa Film Village

Veteran actress Joke Silva has called on the Nigerian government and stakeholders to revive the Tinapa Film Village in Calabar. She expressed concern about the neglected state of the facility, which was built to boost filmmaking, tourism, and entertainment in Nigeria. Speaking in Abuja, Joke Silva noted that Tinapa was designed as a major center for film production, complete with world-class studios and housing for filmmakers. However, she lamented that the site is now underused and its amenities are deteriorating. “It is sad to see Tinapa, which was created with so much hope, not living up to its original vision,” she said. “The film village had the potential to change Nigeria’s movie industry and offer jobs to many young people.” Tinapa Film Village was envisioned in the early 2000s to help make Cross River a leading destination for creativity and […]

Tinubu rallies global allies after Trump threatens military action over Nigeria killings

President Bola Tinubu has said his government is engaging with international partners to address concerns raised by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military action against terror groups in Nigeria over alleged mass killings of Christians. Speaking at the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would overcome terrorism and maintain national stability. He urged citizens not to succumb to fear, stressing that reforms under his Renewed Hope Agenda were positioning Nigeria for growth and international confidence. “The task ahead is immense, but we are engaging the world diplomatically. We will defeat terrorism and continue to secure our nation,” Tinubu said. The President’s remarks came days after Trump labelled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” alleging persecution of Christians. He also instructed U.S. officials to “prepare for possible action” in response. Government […]

18 detained in Turkey over football referees betting scandal

Eighteen people have been detained in Turkey as part of a widening investigation into referees suspected of betting on football matches, the Istanbul prosecutor’s office said on Friday. Authorities have issued arrest warrants for 21 individuals, including 17 referees and the president of a first division club. The prosecutor’s office did not specify how many referees were among the 18 currently being questioned. The probe focuses on allegations of match-fixing and abuse of power within Turkish football. Last week, the Disciplinary Council of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees accused of violating a strict ban on betting. The suspensions, which range from eight to twelve months, did not specify whether any of the referees had wagered on matches they officiated. US influencers falsely link New York’s mayor-elect Mamdani to ISIS

US right-wing influencers have falsely linked New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to the Islamic State (ISIS), spreading a fabricated statement that has garnered millions of views across social media, researchers revealed on Thursday. Mamdani, the first Muslim and South Asian elected to lead America’s largest city, won decisively this week despite a wave of attacks on his policies and religious background. Anti-Mamdani accounts on X (formerly Twitter) circulated a fake statement supposedly from ISIS, titled “Operation Manhattan Project,” which threatened an attack in New York City on Election Day in retaliation for “American aggression.” Among those amplifying the false claim was conservative influencer Laura Loomer, who has close ties to former President Donald Trump.“The Muslims can’t think of a better way to celebrate the victory of a Muslim mayoral candidate today than by committing an ISIS attack in NYC,” Loomer […]

Peru declares Mexican president persona non grata over asylum row

Peru’s Congress voted on Thursday to declare Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum persona non grata after her government granted asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who is on trial for allegedly aiding a 2022 coup attempt. The resolution, passed by a 63–33 vote, deepens a growing diplomatic rift between the two countries. Tensions escalated on Monday when Mexico approved asylum for Chavez, prompting Peru to sever formal diplomatic ties. Chavez served as prime minister in December 2022 under then-president Pedro Castillo, who was ousted and arrested after attempting to dissolve Congress during a political standoff. Peru’s acting Congress president, Fernando Rospigliosi, accused Sheinbaum of “interfering” in the country’s internal affairs, saying Mexico’s decision to shelter Chavez violated diplomatic norms.“It has been clearly established that President Sheinbaum interfered not only through statements but also through direct action by granting asylum,” […]

US Congress seeks visa bans, asset freezes on Miyetti Allah

A new bill introduced in the United States Congress seeks to impose visa bans and asset freezes on members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore over alleged violations of religious freedom against Christians in Nigeria. The bill, sponsored by Representative Christopher Smith, follows the U.S. re-designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act — a status given to countries accused of serious violations of religious freedom. Smith praised U.S. President Donald Trump for the decision, which came amid growing tensions between Washington and Abuja over allegations of religious persecution. The Nigerian Federal Government, however, dismissed any panic, saying it has opened diplomatic discussions with the U.S. to address the concerns. Information Minister Mohammed Idris said after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting that Nigeria […]
