Yuletide: Domestic Operator Faults Hike in Airfares

Less than three months after several domestic Nigerian airlines raised ticket prices to South-East and South-South destinations ahead of the Christmas period, Aero Contractors MD/CEO Captain Ado Sanusi has condemned the move, calling it a “wrong business model.” While acknowledging that airlines typically adjust fares based on supply and demand, Sanusi described the practice of hiking airfares during the Yuletide as unfair to travellers. Sanusi suggested airlines should better manage booking inventories, fare buckets, and advance sales rather than relying on last-minute price increases. He emphasized that although higher demand during the holidays justifies some price changes, unfair spikes undermine trust with customers. In August, Air Peace and United Nigeria notably increased ticket prices for popular routes such as Lagos-Asaba, Lagos-Enugu, Benin, and Owerri, with industry justification based on peak one-way traffic and economic factors. UK to Allow Nigerians, Other Foreign Students Switch to Innovator Founder Visa

The United Kingdom has announced that international students—including thousands of Nigerians—will soon be able to switch directly to the Innovator Founder visa from within the country. This major policy shift, effective November 25, 2025, allows students on valid Study visas to transition to the business-focused visa route without returning to their home country. Formerly, international students had to exit the UK before applying for the Innovator Founder visa. The new rule removes that hurdle, enabling students to set up businesses and launch their entrepreneurial careers as their applications are being processed in the UK. The Innovator Founder visa permits graduates to establish and operate innovative businesses that introduce novel products or services to the UK market. To be eligible, applicants must present a viable business idea endorsed by an approved body and meet all other requirements. This policy update follows […]

Customs Seizes Over 166 Wraps of Cannabis, “Canadian Loud” in Owerri

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone C of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over 151 wraps of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp) and 15 wraps of Canadian Loud to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Owerri, Imo State. The narcotics, weighing 77,500 grams and 8,600 grams respectively, were intercepted during routine patrols by officers acting on credible intelligence. Customs Area Controller Bishir Balogun explained that the substances were expertly concealed to evade detection, but diligent customs officers uncovered the illicit cargo during operations within the zone. Balogun emphasized that this achievement highlights the ongoing collaboration between the Customs Service and NDLEA toward safeguarding Nigeria’s security, health, and economy. Balogun stressed that while the NCS’s mandate includes revenue generation and trade facilitation, intercepting banned and dangerous goods remains crucial to national security. He commended FOU Zone C officers […]

Trump Threatens to Sue BBC for Up to $5 Billion Over Edited Speech

President Donald Trump has announced plans to sue the BBC for up to $5 billion over its Panorama documentary, which combined segments of his January 6, 2021 speech in a way his lawyers allege was “false and defamatory.” The edit allegedly made it appear Trump was directly inciting the US Capitol riot, triggering outcry and the resignation of BBC Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness. The controversy broke after an adviser’s memo detailed how three portions of Trump’s speech were spliced, causing reputational harm that Trump’s team claims was “disseminated worldwide.” BBC Chair Samir Shah and the corporation have apologized for the “error of judgement” but rejected Trump’s demand for financial compensation or legal liability. Despite the apology and the BBC’s decision to pull the documentary from rebroadcast, Trump insists the edit amounted to “election interference” […]

Trump Signs Order Cutting Tariffs on Beef, Coffee, and Other Essential Imports

President Donald Trump signed an order exempting agricultural imports such as beef, bananas, coffee, tomatoes, and more from US tariffs, effective Thursday, to mitigate cost-of-living pressures. This move comes as American voters face rising prices, especially for beef and coffee, which have jumped roughly 20% this year due to climate shocks and disrupted trade. The tariff exemptions also include avocados, coconuts, and pineapples—products not grown in the US in sufficient quantity. Coffee industry leaders praise the decision, saying it will stabilize prices for consumers and secure supply for businesses. The order follows new trade deals with Argentina, Guatemala, Ecuador, and El Salvador, which also benefit from tariff waivers for certain agricultural goods. While Trump’s administration maintains tariffs on some items to address perceived unfair trade practices, these exemptions specifically target commodities critical for domestic demand and affordability. Policymakers acknowledge that […]
