Taraba Governor Orders Immediate Payment to Cleared Civil Servants

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has ordered the immediate payment of salaries and outstanding entitlements to civil servants cleared by the State Staff Verification Committee. The formal submission of the committee’s report marks a major milestone after five months of a sweeping workforce audit that led to the removal of over 7,000 names due to irregular records. The governor commended the committee for its transparency and called for follow-up reviews for workers whose recruitment suffered from administrative lapses. He emphasized the importance of accountability in the civil service and noted that decisions should stand the test of time. Committee chairman Alhaji Abdulkadir Haruna said just 1,410 workers were fully cleared and will be reinstated with immediate payment of their entitlements. The findings revealed cases of payroll fraud and called for tighter controls, digital payroll automation, and adherence to proper […]

WHO: 840 Million Women Globally Have Suffered Sexual Violence

A new report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UN partners reveals that 840 million women worldwide have experienced partner or sexual violence in their lifetime, a crisis affecting nearly one in three women globally—a rate unchanged since 2000. In the past year alone, 316 million women (11% of those aged 15+) faced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. The report, released before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, also notes 263 million women have faced non-partner sexual violence since age 15, though this figure is likely underreported. WHO’s Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus called violence against women one of the most “pervasive injustices” and urged governments to scale up prevention, survivor services, and data tracking. However, in 2022, only 0.2% of global aid went to programs addressing violence against women, with support declining further […]

Africa’s Carbon Credit Deals With Blue Carbon Stall, Raising Oversight Concerns

Several African nations, including Liberia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, and Nigeria, signed major carbon credit agreements with Dubai-based Blue Carbon in 2023 to protect forests and sell credits to global polluters. The deals promised revenue, environmental benefits, and local investment. However, within two years, these agreements stalled or vanished with little implementation. Liberia’s million-hectare deal was halted after concerns about transparency, lack of local consultation, and potential violations of land rights. Similar agreements in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and outside Africa (Papua New Guinea) failed to progress, often lapsing at the MOU stage. Background investigations found no trace of Blue Carbon or its projects in global carbon registry records. The company’s web presence and activities faded in 2025, and its offices could not be verified. Activists say the projects were primarily “greenwashing,” allowing polluters to claim climate action with no real impact or […]

Former Tottenham Star Taricco Suspended for Racist Gesture in South Korea

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Mauricio Taricco has been suspended for five matches and fined 20 million won ($13,600) by the K League after making a racist “slant-eye” gesture toward a referee in South Korea. Taricco, now assistant coach at Jeonbuk, was sent off after contesting a penalty call and then reportedly shouted the Spanish word for “racist” before pulling his eyes back with his fingers. K League officials ruled his behavior racist and referenced similar gestures as grounds for prior FIFA sanctions. Taricco claimed he was simply questioning whether the referee saw the handball, but the league rejected his explanation. Jeonbuk, under manager Gus Poyet, won the first-division title this season, with Taricco as assistant. The duo have worked together in England, Greece, Spain, China, and France. The K League emphasized zero tolerance for actions widely perceived as racist.
