WHO Raises Alarm Over Rising HIV Infections, Falling Funds

On World AIDS Day 2025, the World Health Organisation warned that the global fight against HIV is at a dangerous turning point as new infections rise while funding and political commitment weaken. The theme for this year, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” highlights the need to rebuild and strengthen programmes that have been hit by crises and neglect. WHO said an estimated 40.8 million people are currently living with HIV worldwide, with the Eastern Mediterranean Region alone accounting for about 610,000 of them. In that region, annual new infections have almost doubled in less than a decade, jumping from 37,000 in 2016 to 72,000 in 2024, yet fewer than four in ten people know their HIV status and less than a third are on treatment. The organisation warned that dedicated HIV funding is declining, services are being disrupted and […]

Trump’s Moves on Nigeria Driven by Oil, Says Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare has claimed that President Donald Trump’s decision to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and speak of Christian genocide is tied to a strategic push for Nigeria’s oil and other key assets. Speaking during a State of the Nation Address in Lagos, he said the Trump administration sees Nigeria’s oil wealth, mineral resources, real estate and role in emerging technologies as central to its foreign and economic agenda. Bakare said he believed Trump’s interest in Nigeria was confirmed by a vision he had shortly after Trump’s 2024 election victory, in which the US leader arrived in Lagos dressed in traditional Arab clothing and declared, “We are here now.” He interpreted this as a sign of deep economic and geopolitical interest linked to Middle East politics, oil and gas, property and Nigeria’s growing technology ecosystem, with […]

Kwara Monarch Escapes as Vigilantes Battle Bandits

The abducted monarch of Bayagan community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, has escaped from armed bandits along with six other captives. Although the monarch and the other escapees had not yet returned to Bayagan at the time of the report, they contacted community members to confirm they were safe and out of the kidnappers’ control. The bandits had earlier demanded N150 million for the monarch’s release and called the community early on Sunday to reinforce their ransom demand. During that call, they allowed Alhaji Salami to speak, and he begged his […]

Bandits Rampage Across Kogi, Kano, Sokoto, Kwara

Bandits have launched fresh attacks across four Nigerian states, abducting worshippers, a monarch, a bride and her bridal party, and other residents, while killing at least one woman and demanding huge ransoms. The coordinated wave of violence in Kogi, Kano, Sokoto and Kwara has renewed public anger over worsening insecurity and perceived gaps in government response. In Kogi State, gunmen stormed a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, during a service, firing shots and forcing worshippers to flee in panic. The pastor, known as Orlando, his wife and several congregants were taken away, though the exact number of abducted persons remains unclear. Kogi’s Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, said state authorities and security agencies had intensified a manhunt for the attackers and promised that all abducted worshippers would be rescued alive. Ukrainian Team Heads to Florida for High Stakes US Talks

Senior Ukrainian negotiators have arrived in Florida for key talks with US officials as Washington steps up efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The delegation will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner on Sunday. The meetings will focus on a revised 19 point peace plan backed by US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants the conflict to end quickly. The new outline replaces an earlier 28 point proposal that faced strong resistance in Kyiv and across Europe. Trump has signaled he could recognize Russian control over parts of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk that are currently occupied by Moscow’s forces. This would leave Ukraine and its European partners to decide whether to keep supporting Ukraine’s defense or accept the new territorial reality. The Ukrainian team now includes […]

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its fighter jets have destroyed key terror cells in Katsina State and helped to repel a coordinated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)/Boko Haram attack in Borno. The National Examinations Council (NECO) has accredited selected schools in Burkina Faso to host its Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). According to Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the decision followed a detailed assessment of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, ICT facilities, workshops, exam halls, sports grounds, security and teacher availability in the West African country. Sani said the schools were granted full accreditation after the evaluation, stressing that the move reflects NECO’s drive to provide credible assessment services beyond Nigeria’s borders. The development builds on NECO’s growing foreign footprint, which already includes centres in Togo, Benin Republic, Niger, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire and Saudi Arabia, as well as a newly opened centre in London. Nigeria’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, M.D. Galadima, hailed the accreditation as a major relief for Nigerian families who […]
