Buratai rejects ‘fabricated’ terrorism financing allegation

Former Chief of Army Staff and ex Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd), has firmly denied claims that he is connected in any way to terrorism financing, describing the allegation as entirely fabricated and inconsistent with his record of fighting terrorism. In a statement issued on his behalf by former Army spokesperson Brig Gen Sani Kukasheka Usman, Buratai said the online report linking him and other prominent Nigerians to terror financiers is false, unfounded and a smear campaign aimed at tarnishing his name. The statement stressed that at no time in his career has any official body questioned, investigated or indicted him over terrorism financing, adding that no security agency, intelligence service, court, diplomatic mission or oversight body has ever associated him with such offences. It accused Sahara Reporters of relying solely on unverified personal claims by […]

S’Court orders FG to fully implement direct LG allocation judgment

The Supreme Court has criticised the Federal Government for failing to fully implement its July 2024 judgment directing that local governments’ allocations from the Federation Account be paid directly to them. In a lead judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris in a suit filed by the Osun State Attorney General over alleged withheld LG funds, the court said there was no credible evidence that the Attorney General of the Federation had taken concrete steps to operationalise the earlier ruling in AG Federation v AG Abia and others, and ordered that the decision be implemented forthwith. While striking out the Osun suit in a 6–1 majority decision, the court held that the Osun AG lacked locus standi to sue on behalf of local governments because councils are constitutionally recognised, autonomous entities with their own legal capacity to sue and be sued, […]

Nigeria leads continental push to cut cancer deaths

The Federal Government has called for stronger Pan African collaboration to tackle the continent’s growing cancer burden, warning that cancer now kills more Africans each year than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, made the call in Luxor, Egypt, while addressing delegates at the Africa Oncology Collaboration and Innovation Forum, organised with Egyptian oncology institutions, African networks and development partners. Citing GLOBOCAN 2022 data, he said Africa recorded 1.18 million new cancer cases and 763,843 deaths, describing this as an unacceptable burden that demands coordinated continental action. Salako noted that Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa account for the highest cancer numbers in Africa, with Nigeria alone responsible for over 10.5 per cent of the continent’s total cancer burden, driven by lifestyle changes, ageing, late diagnosis, weak screening and gaps in […]

Report: Why ex defence minister Badaru really resigned

Fresh details have emerged suggesting that former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, was pressured to resign not only over health concerns but also because of a long running rift with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and mounting criticism of his handling of insecurity. Badaru, who was appointed defence minister in August 2023 after serving two terms as Jigawa State governor, formally resigned on Monday after about two years in office, with the Presidency announcing that he stepped down due to “poor health”, while President Bola Tinubu immediately swore in former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as his replacement. However, multiple senior defence ministry and military sources told Saturday Punch that a “frosty relationship” between Badaru and Matawalle had quietly destabilised parts of the ministry’s work for months, even though both men maintained a cordial […]
