Pope Leo condemns Gaza suffering in first Christmas sermon

Pope Leo XIV has used his first Christmas Day sermon to denounce the harsh living conditions facing Palestinians in Gaza, drawing a direct link between the biblical story of Jesus’ birth in a stable and the tents now sheltering displaced families. He asked how people could not think of Gaza’s makeshift shelters, exposed for weeks to rain, wind and cold. Leo, the first pope from the United States, usually keeps his Christmas homilies focused on spiritual themes but made an unusually pointed appeal on the situation in Gaza this year. He has repeatedly said that any lasting solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict must include the creation of a Palestinian state. The pope noted that, despite a ceasefire agreed in October between Israel and Hamas after two years of intense Israeli military operations, humanitarian groups say too little aid is reaching […]

China says US is trying to block closer India ties

China has accused the United States of twisting its defence policy in an effort to block closer ties between Beijing and New Delhi. Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks in Beijing while reacting to a U.S. Pentagon report on China’s approach to India. The report suggested China may seek to use easing border tensions with India to curb the growth of U.S.–India relations. Lin said China views its relationship with India from a long term and strategic perspective. He added that the border issue is strictly a matter between the two neighbours. He said China opposes any outside country commenting on or interfering in the border dispute. Lin also rejected what he called U.S. attempts to misrepresent China’s defence policy.

Aiyegbeni tells Super Eagles to prepare for tougher AFCON tests

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has urged Nigeria to prepare for tougher tests at the Africa Cup of Nations despite their 2–1 opening win over Tanzania. He praised Victor Osimhen’s hard work and movement but noted that the Galatasaray forward was unlucky not to score, even though he consistently found good positions in front of goal. Aiyegbeni highlighted the team’s attacking play in Fez, where Nigeria built moves through the flanks and quick combinations around the box. He said Alex Iwobi controlled key moments, linking well with Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman to create chances for Osimhen. He pointed to the number of opportunities created as proof that the system around the striker is working. However, he insisted that Nigeria must keep improving their creative midfield play if they want to go far at AFCON 2025. Quoting his comments […]

Emeka Rollas cautions actors on social media disputes

Outgoing national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, has warned Nollywood actors against using social media to air grievances and fight personal battles. In an official notice shared on Instagram, Rollas said the Guild will sanction members who call out colleagues, drag others online or turn social media into a courtroom, in line with AGN’s constitution and disciplinary procedures. He stressed that so‑called social media trials do not bring justice but instead deepen divisions, spread misinformation and damage the image and integrity of Nollywood. He urged actors to use recognised internal channels, committees and processes to resolve disputes. Rollas appealed to actors to support the incoming AGN leadership by showing good conduct, restraint and professionalism both online and offline. As he prepares to hand over on January 29, 2026, he said he does not want the new […]
