Super Eagles: Chelle challenged to continue Nigeria’s renaissance post AFCON

Despite Nigeria’s painful semi final exit at AFCON 2025, stakeholders have challenged Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to build on the team’s renewed identity and fighting spirit rather than allow the setback to derail recent progress. Many fans and analysts believe the squad’s high‑intensity displays, tactical organisation and improved mentality signal the beginning of a new era for Nigerian football. Chelle, appointed in January 2025 on a two‑year deal, has already expressed his desire to stay on, stressing that his long‑term project is to rebuild the Super Eagles into a consistent force in Africa and beyond. However, he admitted that his future rests with the Nigeria Football Federation, which must now decide whether to retain him and consolidate on the gains of the tournament. Supporters are urging continuity in technical leadership, better youth development and sustained integration of talented […]

BREAKING: Supreme Court dismisses Sule Lamido’s son Aminu’s appeal on undeclared $40,000 cash

The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, challenging his conviction for failing to declare $40,000 at the airport and for making a false declaration of foreign currency in a case brought by the EFCC. In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday by a five‑member panel, the apex court resolved all three issues raised in the appeal against Aminu and held that the case lacked merit. In the lead judgment written by Justice Adamu Jauro and read by Justice Abubakar Umar, the court affirmed the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, Kaduna, which had upheld the verdict of the Federal High Court in Kano. The trial court had, in its July 12, 2015 judgment, convicted Aminu and ordered the forfeiture of 25 per cent of the undeclared […]

Kano suspends doctors over scissors found in patient’s stomach

Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical doctors at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre after an investigation confirmed that surgical scissors were mistakenly left inside the stomach of a patient, leading to her death. The victim, identified as Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, had undergone surgery at the government‑owned facility in September 2025 and reportedly suffered persistent abdominal pains for months afterward. A fresh scan conducted days ago revealed that a pair of scissors had been forgotten in her abdomen during the initial operation, prompting plans for corrective surgery. Unfortunately, she died on Sunday while preparations were underway, sparking outrage from relatives and members of the public over alleged medical negligence at the centre. In a statement, the Board’s Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, described the incident as clear medical negligence and announced the immediate suspension […]

Experts cast doubt over ‘foiled coup’ on Burkina Faso’s Traore

Burkina Faso’s military government says it recently foiled an assassination plot and coup attempt against junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore, allegedly planned for early January and involving a plan to kill him and seize key state institutions. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana accused former transitional president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba of masterminding the operation, claiming it was uncovered “in the final hours” by intelligence services. State media went on to broadcast days of televised “confessions” by alleged plotters, with authorities describing the incident as yet another attempt by “enemies” to destabilise the country. But regional analysts and Burkinabe observers say these repeated announcements of foiled coups are becoming harder to believe, given the lack of independently verifiable evidence and the increasingly dramatic official narratives. Some experts warn that the junta’s frequent claims of plots and assassination attempts risk looking like a strategy […]

ISWAP attacks: Court exonerates DSS over terror suspect’s whereabouts

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has exonerated the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that it secretly detained and killed alleged ISWAP leader in Kogi, Yusuf Lukman Omeiza, who was linked to a series of terror attacks. The suit was filed by Omeiza’s relatives, Jimoh Yusuf and Fati Mohammed, who sought declarations that his alleged arrest, detention and killing without trial violated his right to life and demanded 10 billion naira in damages from the DSS and the Attorney General of the Federation. Lawyers to the plaintiffs relied largely on claims that the suspect had disappeared after his 2015 arrest in Okene, insisting that security agents must be held responsible. However, the DSS, through its counsel, argued that the allegation of extra‑judicial killing was based on hearsay and tendered documents to show that Omeiza was transferred to […]

Reality star Adekunle blasts referee, says Nigeria was robbed

Reality TV star Adekunle Olopade has slammed the officiating in Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 semi final loss, insisting the Super Eagles were “robbed” by controversial decisions from Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea. In a post shared on X, he argued that key calls went against Nigeria at crucial moments and altered the outcome of the game. Adekunle faulted the referee for what he described as soft bookings and inconsistent foul calls that disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm. He also questioned a late decision that went in favour of the opposition, claiming it killed any chance of a Super Eagles comeback. The reality star said Nigerians have every right to feel aggrieved, given the high stakes and the team’s strong performances throughout the tournament. He urged football authorities to improve officiating standards at major competitions to protect players’ efforts and fans’ trust in the game.
