At least three people are feared dead after suspected political thugs attacked the ward congress of the All Progressives Congress in Idanre, Ondo State, throwing the exercise into chaos. The violence reportedly broke out on Wednesday at Odode-Idanre, the headquarters of Idanre Local Government Area, as party members gathered to elect ward officers. Eyewitnesses said gunmen and machete wielding thugs invaded the venue, shooting sporadically and attacking participants, leaving several people injured and vehicles vandalised or set ablaze. One of the victims was identified as Raphael Adetimehin, younger brother of the state APC chairman, Ade Adetimehin, who was allegedly shot and macheted after being mistaken for the party boss. EFCC holds on to El-Rufai over alleged ₦432bn fraud probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is keeping former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in custody as detectives intensify investigations into alleged mismanagement of about ₦423–₦432 billion during his eight-year tenure. El-Rufai, who honoured an invitation at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, arrived on Monday morning and has now spent at least two nights in detention while answering questions on loans, contracts and financial transactions executed between 2015 and 2023. Sources at the commission said investigators are scrutinising reports of a Kaduna State House of Assembly ad hoc committee, which accused the former governor and some of his aides of abuse of office, contract inflation, money laundering and diversion of public funds. The panel had alleged that huge loans obtained in the name of the state were either misapplied or not properly accounted for and recommended that El-Rufai, commissioners […]

President Bola Tinubu has called on Christians and Muslims to use the rare coincidence of Lent and Ramadan starting on the same day this year as a fresh opportunity to deepen unity, peace and mutual respect in Nigeria. He described the simultaneous commencement of the two holy seasons as an uncommon event that underlines the shared values of sacrifice, devotion and compassion at the heart of both faiths. In a personally signed message, the President urged the faithful to promote good neighbourliness, national stability and prayers for Nigeria’s progress and security throughout the fasting periods. He reminded Nigerians that, despite religious differences, “we share a lot in common and are one people under God.” Tinubu encouraged Christians observing Lent to reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ through repentance, charity and acts of kindness. EFCC trial of Malami, El Rufai won’t intimidate opposition, says ADC

The African Democratic Congress has said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s prosecution of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and ex Kaduna governor Nasir El Rufai will not intimidate opposition politicians or weaken the party’s resolve. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi described the cases as “selective prosecutions” that appear politically motivated. He argued that while the party supports the fight against corruption, recent EFCC actions give the impression that the agency is being used as “a gladiator in the political arena rather than an impartial warrior against financial malpractice.” Abdullahi warned that targeting prominent opposition figures risks undermining public confidence in anti graft institutions. The ADC also condemned the alleged attempt to arrest El Rufai at the Abuja airport and the tear gassing of his supporters during a protest at the EFCC headquarters. The party said such incidents look […]

Dangote predicts naira could strengthen to ₦1,100/$1 in 2026

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, says the naira could appreciate to around ₦1,100 to the US dollar before the end of 2026 if current government policies and import controls are sustained. He spoke in Abuja during the launch of the Nigeria Industrial Policy, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and top private sector leaders. Dangote noted that although the naira is currently trading around ₦1,300–₦1,340 on the official market, recent reforms are already easing pressure on the currency. He argued that blocking “reckless” imports that can be produced locally, alongside tighter foreign exchange management, will help further strengthen the naira. “I can assure you that, with what I know, by blocking all this importation, the currency this year will be as low as ₦1,100 if we are lucky,” he said, while suggesting government might even need to slow the naira’s […]

DR Congo eligibility row: FIFA silence keeps Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes in suspense

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup through a petition against DR Congo remain in limbo as FIFA continues to delay a verdict on the eligibility case. The Nigeria Football Federation is challenging DR Congo’s use of several players in last November’s African playoff final, which the Super Eagles lost on penalties. The NFF alleges that some DR Congo stars held dual citizenship and did not fully comply with both Congolese law and FIFA’s nationality switch rules before playing in the tie. Officials argue that the Congolese federation misled FIFA during player clearance, and are pushing for DR Congo’s disqualification and Nigeria’s reinstatement into the intercontinental playoff in Mexico. Reports earlier suggested that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee would announce its decision in February, giving clarity before the March 26–31 play‑off window. However, as at mid February, Nigerian officials say they […]
