IGP Meets Special Operations Team After Gbiniyiri Clashes in Savannah Region

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has met with the Special Operations Team deployed to Bole and surrounding areas in the Savannah Region to review measures aimed at restoring peace and security. The meeting, held at the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo, followed the IGP’s emergency visit last week after violent clashes in Gbiniyiri left at least 31 people dead and dozens injured. According to figures from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), about 1,500 people have been displaced since the violence erupted on August 24, 2025. Days later, on August 28, eight people drowned in the Volta River while attempting to flee the conflict. Security in the area has since been reinforced with additional police and military personnel. Road Works Continue in Akwatia After By-Election

Road construction works in parts of Akwatia are still ongoing days after Tuesday’s by-election, despite earlier suspicions that the projects were quickly rolled out to influence voters. JoyNews observed active roadworks across the constituency, including in Kusi and Tarkrowase, the hometowns of both parents of MP-elect Bernard Bediako. A day after the polls, tipper trucks and graders were still on site, with construction teams preparing the roads for asphalting. Similar activity was recorded in Tarkrowase. A contractor working on some of the projects, who spoke off the record, revealed that the roads had been abandoned for nearly seven years. He explained that the works are currently being executed under a daily contract arrangement. While admitting that construction only began less than a week before the election, he dismissed claims that the timing was politically motivated. Bernard Bediako, the NDC candidate, […]

Onion Farmers Urge Government to Regulate Imports

Onion farmers in Asante Akyem North are calling on the government to regulate the importation of foreign onions in order to protect local produce and ensure a stable market for Ghanaian farmers. They argue that onions brought in from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger are undermining local sales, as traders and consumers often prefer the cheaper imports over homegrown produce. Farmers told Adom News that this year’s harvest has been particularly good, with a bumper yield capable of meeting national demand. They are urging authorities to introduce controls on imported onions, especially during the local harvest season, to safeguard their livelihoods. Moro Adamu, chairman of the Asante Akyem North Onion Farmers Association, appealed for government intervention through policies that would not only protect the onion industry but also encourage youth to embrace agriculture. He added that such support could help […]

He urged calm and discouraged any form of retaliation, stressing that although both he and Azorka hail from Tamale and hold traditional titles, peace must prevail.

Ansa-Asare: Torkornoo’s Conduct Hurt Her Case

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has suggested that former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s failure to regain her position was due to her confrontational conduct during the removal process. Speaking on The Pulse on JoyNews, Ansa-Asare said her approach only worsened her case. “The CJ did not give herself any chance to be heard appropriately. The confrontational attitude she took made it impossible for her to resume her official duties. She was so abrasive, taking the government here and there, going to ECOWAS,” he explained. He argued that the matter was constitutional and required cooperation rather than resistance. “This simple constitutional matter needed cooperation with the committee so that, at the end of the day, we would all be living witnesses to whether there was any merit in the petitions,” he said. According to him, if […]

Afenyo-Markin Slams Removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly criticized the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, calling the process flawed and politically motivated. Speaking to journalists in Akwatia during Tuesday’s by-election on September 2, Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned the grounds for the dismissal, noting that the Article 146 Committee reportedly concluded findings on only one of the three charges leveled against her. “We are mourning democracy. You claim that you have charges against the Chief Justice — you are done with count one, you have counts two and three not concluded, and then you say you dismiss the person. That is the work of the Pwamang Committee? That is what Justice Pwamang did as a judge?” he asked. President John Dramani Mahama announced the Chief Justice’s removal on Monday, September 1, in a statement issued by the Minister of Government […]

Oti Region Sanitation Drive Targets Typhoid Surge

The Regional Environmental Health Office in the Oti Region has launched a major sanitation campaign to combat the rise in typhoid fever cases, which has already led to the arrest of more than six individuals in Dambai for open defecation. The operation, led by Regional Environmental Health Officer Cynthia Sekyere, reflects the region’s commitment to improving sanitation and protecting public health. Open defecation and poor hygiene practices remain key drivers of typhoid and other gastrointestinal infections in the area. In the first half of 2025 alone, the Oti Region recorded over 23,000 cases of typhoid, a surge linked to inadequate sanitation facilities and unsafe water sources. During a recent inspection in Dambai, the task force apprehended residents defecating in open spaces near the District Police Station. Officials warned that such practices pose serious health risks and environmental hazards. Cynthia Sekyere […]
