The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has temporarily closed two major road sections following the collapse of two bridges after heavy rainfall swept through parts of the municipality.
The affected roads include the route linking Borla Junction to Community 22 Washing Bay and the stretch connecting Community 22 to Community 22 Annex. Both roads have been rendered inaccessible after the bridges serving those areas gave way due to severe erosion caused by the downpour.
According to the Assembly, the temporary closure is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting residents, motorists and pedestrians from potential accidents resulting from the damaged infrastructure.
Officials explained that the intensity of the rainfall weakened the bridge structures, leading to their collapse and making the roads unsafe for all forms of movement, including vehicles, motorcycles and foot traffic.
In response to the situation, the Assembly’s Works Department has joined forces with the Department of Urban Roads and municipal disaster management teams to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate emergency response measures.
Engineers and technical personnel have already been deployed to the affected locations, where barricades and warning signs are being installed to restrict access and ensure public safety.
Authorities are also identifying and establishing alternative routes to help commuters navigate the area while repair and rehabilitation works are being planned.
The Assembly has urged residents and road users to comply with all traffic diversions and avoid attempting to use the damaged routes, warning that doing so could pose serious safety risks.
Beyond the immediate response, officials have renewed calls for responsible waste disposal practices across the municipality. The Assembly noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains contributes significantly to flooding by obstructing water flow during heavy rains.
According to local authorities, blocked drainage systems increase pressure on roads, culverts and bridges, making infrastructure more vulnerable to collapse during extreme weather conditions.
With meteorological forecasts indicating the possibility of additional rainfall in the coming weeks, the Assembly warned that continued poor sanitation practices could heighten the risk of further flooding and infrastructure damage.
The Municipal Assembly has assured residents that urgent measures are being implemented to restore access to affected communities and strengthen damaged infrastructure to improve resilience against future weather-related incidents.
