Nollywood veterans Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo have been honoured with the prestigious Industry Merit Awards at the 2026 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). The duo received the special recognition on Saturday night during the 12th AMVCA ceremony held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
The Industry Merit Award is one of the highest honours of the night, reserved for screen legends whose careers have significantly shaped the Nigerian film landscape. Organisers said Sobowale and Kanayo were selected for their decades long contributions, consistency and ability to remain relevant across multiple eras of Nollywood.
In her acceptance speech, Sola Sobowale – fondly known as “King of Boys” after her blockbuster role – expressed gratitude to God, the AMVCA organisers, her colleagues and fans. She paid emotional tribute to her children for standing by her during the toughest moments of her career and dedicating the award to them and to all women in the industry.
Kanayo O. Kanayo, whose career spans classics like Living in Bondage to recent streaming era hits, also took the stage to thank filmmakers and viewers who have supported him over the years. The actor and lawyer used the platform to call for an end to xenophobic attacks in South Africa and urged African countries to deepen cultural and creative collaboration instead.
The 12th AMVCA ceremony also recognised other categories including Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Trailblazer Award and a separate Industry Merit honour for Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD). But many fans and colleagues agreed that the dual recognition for Sobowale and Kanayo was one of the emotional high points of the night, celebrating two figures widely regarded as pillars of Nollywood.

Ego, inner competition undermine collaborations in Afrobeats – Joeboy
Afrobeats singer Joeboy has decried the growing impact of ego and inner competition on collaborations among Nigerian artists. He said many artistes now approach joint projects with a mindset of rivalry instead of focusing on making timeless music together. According to him, some colleagues only agree to collaborate when they think they will gain more numbers, clout or validation than the other party. Joeboy noted that this attitude makes it difficult to build sincere, long-term partnerships of the kind that once helped push Afrobeats to global prominence. He explained that behind the scenes, a lot of artistes constantly monitor streams, charts and social media buzz, even while publicly preaching unity and “love” in the industry. This quiet comparison culture, he argued, breeds resentment and silently kills the spirit of true collaboration. Despite these challenges, Joeboy maintained that collaborations remain one […]

YouTube was never designed for films, says filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola has argued that YouTube was never originally designed as a platform for films, insisting that proper filmmaking is too expensive to be treated lightly. Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Jay On-Air, she said many viewers do not realise the financial risks producers take when they put full movies on the video-sharing site. Ogunmola explained that film is a “very expensive art”, from script development and location costs to equipment, crew and post-production. She noted that some actors now charge between ₦4 million and ₦5 million for just four days on set, before other production expenses are even considered. According to her, many critics who complain about adverts, low budgets or storytelling quality on YouTube films have little idea how much money is tied up in a single project. She maintained that […]

Edoho explained that for the first two years on the show, his monthly pay was “a hundred and something thousand naira,” even though he had to appear on air looking like a millionaire. He joked that he “had to wear a suit as if I owned all the money,” highlighting the contrast between public perception and his actual earnings at the time. The broadcaster said his salary improved significantly after telecoms giant MTN came […]
