UEW Chancellor demands stronger action against illegal mining after Ayensu River pollution

The Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Neenyi Ghartey VII, has renewed his call for stronger action against illegal miners whose activities have heavily polluted the Ayensu River, the main water source for the Agona Kwanyarko treatment plant. The pollution has triggered water shortages across several parts of the Central Region. Neenyi Ghartey VII made the appeal during UEW’s 30th Graduation Ceremony, where 8,288 students graduated across diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes. He said the once-clear Ayensu River—used for drinking, cooking, and irrigation—has turned “milky, toxic, and contaminated with mercury and cyanide” because of ongoing illegal mining. He also condemned recent attacks on security personnel by illegal miners, calling the trend alarming and unacceptable. The Chancellor urged the government to equip the National Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce (NAIMOS) with modern tools and technology to strengthen the national fight against […]

WAEC links sharp decline in 2025 WASSCE Core Mathematics results to student skill gaps

The Head of Public Relations at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, says the steep drop in Core Mathematics performance in the 2025 WASSCE is linked to clear skill gaps among candidates. Speaking on the JOY Super Morning Show, he outlined seven areas where students struggled the most. These included representing mathematical information in diagrams, solving global math-related problems, constructing cumulative frequency tables, making deductions from real-life scenarios, solving simple interest questions, converting word problems into mathematical expressions, and interpreting results from cumulative frequency data. He noted that these topics are not outside the syllabus or the test blueprint. They simply exposed weaknesses in how students engage with the subject. WAEC’s provisional results show that more than half of the candidates—220,008 out of 461,736—failed Core Mathematics, marking the worst performance in seven years. The percentage of students earning […]

The Ghana Revenue Authority has opened an internal investigation into claims that some officers from the Customs Division Task Force in the Ashanti Region extorted money from an importer whose containers were headed for Kumasi. Oppong Nkrumah likens NPP 2028 race to King Solomon’s judgment

Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has compared the New Patriotic Party’s internal contest for the 2028 Flagbearer slot to the well-known Biblical story of King Solomon and the two women who fought over a child. Speaking to delegates in his constituency on Thursday, he said some aspirants were behaving like the woman in the story who preferred the baby be cut in half because she was not the true mother. According to him, their comments and actions suggest they are more interested in creating confusion than safeguarding the unity of the party. Oppong Nkrumah reminded supporters of the lesson in First Kings 3:16, where King Solomon identified the real mother based on her compassion and desire to preserve the child’s life. “One woman asked Solomon to divide the baby. The true mother […]

Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts in Ethiopia After 10,000 Years

A volcano in Ethiopia has erupted for the first known time in more than 10,000 years, sending massive columns of smoke and ash into the sky and disrupting air travel as far away as India. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located in the Afar region in Ethiopia’s northeast, came alive on Sunday after millennia of inactivity. The eruption blanketed nearby villages in thick dust and created new challenges for farmers and livestock herders in the area. Local administrator Mohammed Seid told the Associated Press that no casualties have been reported, but the ashfall threatens grazing lands essential for the community’s survival. Residents recalled the moment the eruption began, describing a sudden, explosive shock. “It felt like a bomb had gone off with smoke and ash,” said Ahmed Abdela, a resident of the area. NASA satellite images captured the plume rising dramatically […]

Tamale High Court Annuls Kpandai Parliamentary Election Results

The Tamale High Court has nullified the parliamentary election results for the Kpandai constituency and instructed the Electoral Commission to conduct a fresh poll within 30 days. The ruling was delivered by Justice Emmanuel Brew Plange after a successful petition challenging the credibility of the December 7, 2024 election. The petition was filed by NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, who argued that the election was compromised by major irregularities. He cited inconsistencies in Form 8A—commonly called the pink sheet—from 41 out of 152 polling stations. According to him, these breaches violated Regulations 39 and 43 of the Public Elections Regulations (CI 127). The court agreed, ruling that the level of non-compliance materially affected the integrity of the results. It therefore ordered a complete rerun of the parliamentary election in the Kpandai constituency. The annulled results had declared NPP’s Matthew Nyindam […]

Eric Opoku Condemns Military’s “Excessive” Operation in Hwidiem

Asunafo South MP Eric Opoku has condemned the military’s response to the attack on members of the NAIMOS taskforce in Hwidiem, calling the follow-up operation excessive and alarming. Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Opoku said he supports holding anyone who assaults security personnel accountable, but argued the military’s actions “went far beyond what is acceptable in a democracy.” “I’m not happy with the excesses in the Hwidiem incident. I have no issue with people facing the law for attacking soldiers or the NAIMOS taskforce, but attacking an entire community and causing the death of an innocent person is unacceptable,” he said. The military reportedly moved into Hwidiem and nearby communities days after the taskforce was attacked, triggering fear among residents. A young man was shot dead during the operation, and several others were allegedly beaten or taken from their […]
