Rethinking Galamsey: Legal Small-Scale Mining Solution

In Ghana’s ongoing struggle with illegal mining (galamsey), one voice is calling for a different, pragmatic approach. Rather than focusing on media hype and endless promises to “stop galamsey,” the speaker argues that the realistic solution lies in transitioning operators into legal, regulated small-scale mining cooperatives. This approach, he says, is rooted not in politics, but in common sense—“I am just a simple village boy,” he emphasized, urging leaders to think beyond short-term fixes. The proposal calls for a structured framework where illegal miners are encouraged and supported to join cooperatives. Designated areas would be set aside for: Legal small-scale mining operations Reclamation of degraded land Large-scale tree planting programs Heavy equipment use would be banned in these areas, and mining within water bodies would be strictly prohibited. The plan emphasizes training for cooperatives to eliminate unsafe practices, particularly the […]

Prof. Bokpin Slams NPP, NDC Over Cocoa Sector Failures

Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, Professor of Finance and Economist at the University of Ghana Business School, has strongly criticised both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for decades of mismanagement of Ghana’s cocoa industry. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Prof. Bokpin argued that successive governments have consistently failed cocoa farmers, traders, and the nation through short-sighted policies, poor investment, and politically motivated pricing regimes. Prof. Bokpin stressed that both the NPP and NDC must accept responsibility for the current state of the cocoa sector. “Both the NPP and NDC owe Ghanaians an apology big time for their handling of the sector,” he declared. He noted that the latest controversy surrounding the newly announced cocoa producer price reflects a much deeper, structural problem that has left farmers vulnerable and unrewarded for their labor. Once the backbone of […]

Akwasi Opong-Fosu Warns Against Ethnic Divisions Online

Former Minister of State and governance expert Akwasi Opong-Fosu has cautioned against the misuse of social media to fuel ethnic divisions, warning that such practices threaten Ghana’s nation-building and national cohesion. He made the call during an engagement with the University of Ghana Asanteman Students Union, led by President Mr. Otu Agyemang, where he was honoured and invited to serve as a mentor to the student body. Speaking on the theme “Escalation of Social Media Ethnic Division and Tensions – A Threat to Nation-Building”, Mr. Opong-Fosu emphasized the double-edged nature of digital platforms. “The same fire that cooks our food can also burn down the house,” he said, quoting an Ashanti proverb. He noted that while social media is a powerful tool for education, mobilization, and connectivity, its misuse to spread hate speech, stereotypes, and misinformation poses a grave danger […]

Anti-Fraud Expert Urges Stricter Port Checks in Ghana

Anti-Fraud Professional and Lecturer, Ransford Nana Addo Jnr, has called for stricter surveillance and checks at Ghana’s ports and customs to curb the influx of stolen vehicles into the country. Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Nana Addo Jnr raised concerns about weak monitoring systems, highlighting the recent case involving Dancehall artist Shatta Wale’s vehicle, which was seized by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after being flagged as stolen. According to Nana Addo Jnr, Ghana’s ports remain the weakest link in the fight against the stolen car trade. “Irrespective of who is buying the vehicle, whether an importer or dealer, if we are working with our international partners like the FBI and Interpol, and a vehicle is branded as stolen, we should ask the authorities questions – how did these vehicles get registered in this country?” he queried. He […]

Health Minister Defends Farming Background

Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has strongly dismissed criticisms suggesting that his farming background makes him unqualified to lead the Ministry of Health. The comments originated from Dr. David Tenkorang, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), who argued that the Minister lacked a deep understanding of hospital operations because “he is a farmer.” Addressing the matter at a press conference on Thursday, Mr. Akandoh described the remarks as misplaced and a needless distraction. He explained that effective leadership of the Health Ministry does not require a medical degree alone, but rather strategic leadership, policy implementation, and problem-solving capacity. “I have been reminded that I am a farmer. Yes, nobody needs to remind me. I am a proud farmer, and everybody knows it. Until my appointment, I was one of the largest rice farmers […]

12 Galamsey Suspects Arrested in Western Region

The fight against illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana’s Western Region has chalked another success following a joint security operation that led to the arrest of 12 suspected illegal miners and the destruction of 25 chanfang machines. The operation, carried out by the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC), comes after the Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) petitioned authorities over the destruction of its rubber plantation. While cocoa farms have long been victims of illegal mining, rubber plantations are now becoming a new target. GREL revealed that more than six hectares of rubber plantation — including 2,000 mature trees ready for tapping — were destroyed in the Adiewoso enclave of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. The company added that toxic chemicals used in galamsey pits are not only killing rubber trees prematurely but also drastically reducing yields. The special operation, launched on Thursday, […]

New Arrest in Immigration Officer Amoah Murder Case

Another arrest has been made in the ongoing investigation into the alleged murder of Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah. The suspect, Thomas Zigah, popularly known as Nii Jaase, was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court on Friday, August 22, 2025. His arrest deepens public interest in a case that has remained in the spotlight since Amoah’s tragic disappearance and subsequent killing. During the hearing, counsel for the accused requested that his client be allowed to seek medical treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital rather than the Police Hospital. The lawyer argued that Zigah’s health condition had worsened while in custody at the Railway Police Station, citing “red eyes” and the need for independent medical evaluation. However, the prosecution opposed the request, pointing out that the suspect had already been taken to the Police Hospital twice, where he was treated […]

Health Minister Launches 24/7 Patient Complaints Call Centre

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has unveiled a 24-hour call centre to handle patient complaints across hospitals nationwide. The initiative, announced at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, August 21, 2025, is part of ongoing reforms to enhance accountability and improve healthcare delivery. Mr. Akandoh explained that the call centre provides the public with a direct platform to report dissatisfaction with healthcare services. “The best option available to anyone who feels dissatisfied is to lodge a complaint. That is why we have made dedicated numbers available so that patients can call in,” he said. However, the minister cautioned that not all complaints automatically prove valid. “The fact that you call does not mean you are right. We will review the matter carefully and deal with it appropriately,” he added. To ensure visibility and accessibility: All health facilities, […]

PAC Orders Arrest of Ex-Energy Staff Over GH₵120k Bond

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has directed the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to collaborate with the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the police to arrest Ms. Yaa Serwaa Gyan, a former staff member who allegedly absconded after benefitting from a fully paid study leave worth over GH₵120,000. According to the Auditor-General’s report, Ms. Gyan failed to return to serve her bond term despite receiving the sponsorship, leaving her post vacant. The report revealed that Ms. Gyan had been granted a study leave with pay, with the binding agreement that she would resume work upon completion of her studies. However, she reportedly failed to honour her obligation and has since left the country. “Our checks show that she left the country about more than a year ago… we are told she has gone to the US,” an official […]

CNMAG Criticises GRNMA Secretary Over Minister Comments

The Concerned Nurses and Midwifery Association of Ghana (CNMAG) has strongly criticised comments made by Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), describing his remarks against Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh as “highly inappropriate.” The controversy comes in the wake of the recent assault on a nurse at Ridge Hospital, which has sparked public outcry and debates within the health sector. Following the incident, a viral video captured Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh shaking hands with Ralph Saint Williams, one of the alleged perpetrators of the assault. This drew criticism, with Dr. Tenkorang-Twum questioning why the Minister exchanged pleasantries with Ralph. The GRNMA General Secretary argued that the Minister’s gesture showed “disrespect” towards nurses and subsequently issued a 48-hour ultimatum to government to arrest Ralph, warning that GRNMA would “advise itself” if no […]
