Agric Minister Credits Feed Ghana for Bumper Harvest

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has credited Ghana’s ongoing bumper harvest to the government’s flagship Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as proof of the initiative’s success. His comments respond to concerns from farmers in several communities who say they are struggling to find buyers despite producing food in record quantities. Speaking on Citi FM on Wednesday, Mr Opoku said the challenge is not isolated but part of a nationwide outcome driven by the government’s intervention. “The farmers in many parts of the country are complaining that they have produced in quantities beyond the market, and they are not getting buyers. In Asunafo South, for example, the youth who participated in the Feed Ghana Programme told me they have been harvesting rice in large volumes and are looking for a market. What we are seeing is a nationwide bumper […]

UG Scholar Criticises Mahama’s UN Reparations Call, Cites Africa’s Role in Slave Trade

The Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised former President John Mahama’s call for reparations during his recent address at the United Nations General Assembly, describing the demand as misplaced. Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante acknowledged that many have hailed the ex-president’s speech as bold and visionary. “It is an apt description of a speech from a leader who is visionary, who fears nobody, and a leader worth his salt. I have no problem with that, and I concede to a large extent that yes, the speech had what it takes to be presented at that forum,” he said. However, he disagreed with the focus on reparations for slavery, arguing that Africa cannot be absolved of responsibility in the transatlantic slave trade. “The president touched on […]

Penkye Fish Processing Plant Abandoned, Residents Demand Accountability

A multi-thousand-cedi fish processing facility built under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo-Bawumia administration to modernize fish preservation in Penkye has been left abandoned, deteriorating into a sanitation hazard and crippling the livelihoods of fishermen and fishmongers. The plant, meant to replace traditional methods such as smoking and salting, has never been commissioned. Years of neglect have rendered it unusable, forcing the community back to outdated preservation practices ill-suited for Penkye’s humid environment. During a recent visit, Bernard Kwame Dogbey, a level 300 journalism student at the University of Education, Winneba, found a community frustrated and struggling. Beyond piles of refuse and choked gutters, the lack of a functioning preservation system stood out as the central challenge. Fishmonger Ama Asantewaa described the loss:“We lose a lot of our catch to spoilage because we cannot preserve it properly. Smoking […]

Ghana declares forests, rivers Security Zones in galamsey fight

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has declared all forest reserves and river bodies in Ghana as Security Zones, reaffirming government’s uncompromising commitment to the fight against illegal mining (galamsey). He made the declaration at the closing ceremony of a week-long intensive training programme for personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in Sunyani. The Minister commended the task force for its achievements since its establishment in June, including the arrest of more than 1,000 illegal miners, the repossession of nine restricted forest reserves, and the confiscation of over 900 water pumps, later reassigned to the Ministry of Agriculture for irrigation purposes. “These are not mere statistics. They are victories; victories for our land, for our water, and for our people,” he said. Mr. Buah stressed […]

Ashaiman court remands man for posing as police officer

The Ashaiman District Court has remanded 54-year-old Kofi Boakye Frimpong into custody for allegedly impersonating a public officer by posing as a police chief inspector without lawful authority, contrary to Section 237 of the Criminal Offence Act, 1960 (Act 29). Frimpong’s plea was not taken as investigations continue to determine whether he was previously a police officer. According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Henry Nartey Tetteh, the complainants were officers of the Zenu-Attadeka Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) who arrested Frimpong. On September 17, 2025, at about 9:00 am, the officers encountered him at the Zenu Star Fuel Station dressed in a tactical black police uniform with a chief inspector’s rank badge. Suspicious of his identity, they engaged him briefly, during which Frimpong reportedly jumped onto a motorbike and ordered the rider to speed off. After a chase, […]

Scrap National Placement Centre – GNACOPS Director

Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Obengfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, has called for the scrapping of the National Placement Resolution Centre, arguing that it undermines the work of regional and district education offices tasked with resolving Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) issues. The Ghana Education Service (GES) established Placement Resolution Centres across districts and regions to assist students, parents, and guardians facing challenges with Senior High School (SHS) placements. However, Mr. Gyetuah contends that the national centre continues to overshadow these local offices, resulting in unnecessary congestion whenever placements are released. His comments follow chaotic scenes at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Accra on Tuesday, September 23, where hundreds of parents and students gathered to address placement difficulties. Speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, September 27, he argued […]

Ghana miners launch taskforce to fight illegal mining

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has inaugurated an Anti-Galamsey Taskforce to intensify the fight against illegal mining on rivers and streams nationwide. The taskforce is mandated to monitor members’ operations, enforce compliance, and promote responsible mining practices. It will also conduct peer reviews to ensure accountability and adherence to industry standards. To enhance operations, NCSSMAG has deployed taskforces across major mining areas and procured a mini speedboat to patrol water bodies. The initiative supports the government’s Blue Water Guards program under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which aims to safeguard Ghana’s rivers from destructive mining practices. At the launch, NCSSMAG President Michael Kwadwo Peprah issued a strong warning to illegal miners. “Our message is clear: all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. The taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for […]

Parliamentary Committee Visits Gnani and Kukuo Camps, Pledges Support for Witchcraft Victims

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights, in collaboration with several civil society organisations (CSOs), has visited the Gnani Camp in the Northern Region to assess living conditions and document the situation of residents. The visit formed part of a three-day fact-finding mission to alleged witches’ camps, ahead of the passage of the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2025, also known as the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill. Alhassan, leader of the Gnani Camp, briefed the delegation on challenges faced by residents, citing stigma, limited resources, and lack of access to education and healthcare as the most pressing concerns. He explained that the camp provides refuge for individuals accused of witchcraft who face rejection and threats in their home communities. The Committee later visited the Kukuo Camp, where they met residents and paid homage to the local chief as part of cultural protocol. […]
