Teachers in Abuakwa South have been honoured as national builders and agents of transformation at the 2025 Akosua Agyeiwaa Memorial Municipal Teachers’ Awards, with the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, leading tributes to their dedication and impact.
Addressing participants at the ceremony, Dr. Agyemang said the awards were not merely about recognition, but an opportunity to reflect on the crucial role teachers play in Ghana’s social and economic development. He described educators as the foundation of every profession, shaping not only academic achievement but also character, discipline, confidence, and purpose.
The MP acknowledged that teaching remains one of the most demanding professions, noting that teachers are required to manage diverse learners under challenging conditions while maintaining high professional standards. He commended teachers in Abuakwa South for their resilience, commitment, and innovation, assuring them that their efforts are valued and recognised.
To demonstrate his commitment to education in the constituency, Dr. Agyemang outlined several initiatives introduced under his leadership. These include the Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz, Spelling Challenge, Readathon, Inter-School Debates, the BECE Support Programme, inter-school sports competitions, and teacher capacity-building programmes.
According to him, these initiatives are designed to strengthen teaching and learning, promote excellence, and identify and nurture talent among pupils and students in the municipality.
“These are long-term investments in our children and in the future of Abuakwa South,” he stated, pledging to expand and sustain the programmes.
The awards scheme, named in memory of his late mother, Madam Akosua Agyeiwaa, also carried personal meaning for the MP. He described her as a passionate educator who firmly believed in the transformative power of education, adding that the scheme honours teachers who continue to nurture children despite the challenges they face.
Kibi Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Comfort Ofori-Appiah, expressed hope that the awards would inspire teachers to intensify their efforts to improve educational outcomes in the municipality. She, however, raised concerns about a teacher deficit of more than 200, which has resulted in some educators handling multiple classes.
She also highlighted the difficulty of posting teachers to deprived communities and appealed for the construction of staff bungalows to improve teacher retention and performance. Mrs. Ofori-Appiah congratulated all award recipients and encouraged them to maintain high standards in their classrooms.
As awards were presented, Dr. Agyemang urged the honourees to view their recognition as a renewed call to excellence, reaffirming his appreciation for teachers in Abuakwa South and their role in nation-building, one learner at a time.
