The list of teams that have qualified for the World Cup last 32 is beginning to take shape as the knockout stage approaches.
Several nations have already secured their places in the round of 32 after strong performances in the group stage. The expanded tournament format means more teams now have a chance to advance beyond the first round.

Oil back to pre-war levels as Hormuz traffic rebounds
Oil prices have fallen back to pre-war levels as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues to recover. The decline comes as vessel traffic through the key waterway rebounds after weeks of disruption tied to the Iran conflict. Traders are also reacting to signs that diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran are helping ease fears of a prolonged supply shock. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said shipments through the strait are nearing the levels seen before the fighting began. He added that roughly 20 million barrels passed through the strait in the previous 24 hours, suggesting a strong recovery in maritime traffic. At the same time, US officials are trying to reassure Gulf allies worried about Washington’s preliminary deal with Iran. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been speaking with regional partners to calm concerns over the agreement’s impact on […]

Two jailed 25 years for kidnapping in Ekiti
An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced two men to 25 years in prison each for kidnapping. The convicts, Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar, were found guilty of abducting Omoboade Adesina, a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC. The court said the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The judge delivered the ruling after reviewing the evidence presented during the trial. A third defendant in the case was discharged and acquitted because the court found the evidence against him insufficient. The kidnapping case was part of the growing concern over violent crime in Nigeria. The court’s decision was seen as a strong warning to kidnappers and other criminal groups operating in the state. Justice officials said the judgment reflects the seriousness of kidnapping offences and the need for stricter punishment to deter similar crimes.

Five highly anticipated 2026 World Cup matches that disappointed fans
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been praised for its exciting moments and viral fan experiences, but at least five matches that fans expected to be thrilling instead delivered disappointing results. One of the biggest disappointments was Spain’s goalless draw against underdog Cape Verde, a team ranked 65 places below Spain. Spain was one of the top favorites for the tournament, and many fans expected a high-scoring victory, but the match ended 0–0 in a lacklustre performance. Cristiano Ronaldo’s largely inconspicuous performance in DR Congo’s 1–1 draw with Portugal also left many viewers wondering whether he is past his prime. Despite high hopes for Ronaldo’s influence, he struggled to make a major impact as DR Congo scored its first-ever World Cup goal through Yoane Wissa.
