The United States Senate is set to vote on a resolution that would block President Donald Trump from launching further military action in Venezuela without explicit approval from Congress.
The measure, introduced under the War Powers Act, follows the US special forces operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and has raised fears of wider conflict.
The resolution is sponsored by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and Republican Senator Rand Paul, reflecting rare bipartisan concern over presidential war powers.
Supporters argue that the Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the authority to declare war and that lawmakers must reassert that role after the raid in Venezuela.
Republican leaders have so far blocked similar efforts, and it is unclear whether enough members of Trump’s party will back the latest resolution for it to pass.
Even if approved in the Senate, the measure would face tough odds in the House and could be vetoed by Trump, limiting its practical impact but still sending a political signal.
