Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran have driven Nigerian crude oil prices close to $120 per barrel, as global markets react to supply fears around the Strait of Hormuz. Data cited from the Central Bank of Nigeria show that Bonny Light, Nigeria’s flagship crude grade, recently traded around $117 per barrel, up sharply from earlier in the year.
Analysts say the US–Iran war and Iran’s move to restrict traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas shipments, have fuelled the price spike. Nigeria has benefited from higher export receipts, with some reports estimating an oil revenue windfall running into several trillions of naira compared to budget benchmarks.
However, the surge in crude prices is a double‑edged sword for the country, which still imports most of its refined petrol. The higher global oil price raises the landing cost of imported fuel, putting renewed pressure on the naira and feeding into domestic inflation, especially transport and food costs.
Market watchers note that Nigerian crude is currently trading at a premium of about $5 above Brent, reflecting strong demand for its light, sweet cargoes in Europe and Asia. Even so, refinery constraints and subsidy concerns at home mean Nigerians are not feeling the full benefits of the export boom in their daily lives.
With US President Donald Trump vowing tougher action if Iran does not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, traders warn that prices could climb even higher in the coming weeks. Energy experts are urging the Nigerian government to use the temporary windfall to strengthen buffers, support local refining capacity and cushion vulnerable households from the knock‑on effects of imported fuel costs.

Finland Plans Stricter Rules for International Students
Finland is planning new rules that would make it harder for international students to get and keep residence permits. The proposed changes are meant to increase financial checks and make sure students can support themselves while studying in the country. Authorities also want to reduce the risk of students depending on public welfare. Under the plan, students may be asked to show stronger proof of funds when applying for permits. Officials may also review whether students are receiving social assistance and check if they still meet the required conditions during permit renewals. The new rules are expected to affect students from outside the European Union and European Economic Area the most. They may also face closer scrutiny when applying for or renewing study permits in Finland. The government says the measures are meant to protect students from financial hardship and […]

Air defence systems intercepted two of them, while the third struck an electrical generator located outside the inner security perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi. Iran Faces Criticism Over Rising Executions
A growing wave of executions in Iran has raised fresh international concern, as human rights groups accuse authorities of using the death penalty to silence dissent following recent political unrest and regional conflict. One of the latest cases involved 29-year-old Kurdish prisoner Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, who was executed after spending more than three years on death row in western Iran. Before his execution, he sent a voice message from prison declaring his innocence and claiming he had been forced into false confessions through torture and threats. Mehrab had been arrested during the nationwide protests that erupted in 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody. Iranian authorities accused him of involvement in the killing of a member of the Basij militia during the demonstrations. According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, he was executed without prior notice to […]

Ukrainian Soldier Survives 225 Days at Front
A Ukrainian infantry soldier known by the call sign “Kenya” has returned from one of the harshest experiences of the war after spending 225 days trapped inside a front-line foxhole near the eastern city of Kostyantynivka. Weak from months of isolation and constant danger, he could barely walk when he finally made it back to his brigade. According to Ukrainian troops, rotating soldiers on the front line has become increasingly difficult because of the growing threat posed by drones. Several attempts were reportedly made to replace Kenya, but commanders could not safely reach his position. The soldier spent two days travelling nearly 11 kilometres through dangerous territory, avoiding mines and hiding from surveillance drones as he tried to escape the heavily contested area. Kostyantynivka remains one of the most critical battlegrounds in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces say Russian troops have […]
