Uganda opposition leader Bobi Wine ‘escapes’ house arrest

Article arrow_drop_down

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine says he escaped a night‑time raid on his home by police and army personnel, hours after rejecting early election results that show President Yoweri Museveni heading for another term in office. In a post on X, the former pop star, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said security forces stormed his residence, cut power and disabled some CCTV cameras before he managed to flee.

Wine said he is now in an undisclosed location while his wife and family remain effectively under house arrest, surrounded by soldiers and police. Ugandan authorities have denied abducting him, with a police spokesman insisting he is “at home” and “not under arrest,” despite his party alleging an army helicopter had earlier landed in his compound and taken him away.

The opposition figure has accused the government of massive vote‑rigging in Thursday’s poll, held under an internet blackout and amid a heavy security clampdown on his supporters. Human rights groups and international observers have raised concern over the post‑election environment, as tensions rise and Wine urges Ugandans to resist what he calls “fake results.”
