Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that Christians in Nigeria are facing an “existential threat,” urging American lawmakers to investigate what he described as a “mass slaughter” in the country.
Trump made the statement on Friday via his Truth Social platform, alleging that “radical Islamists” were behind widespread killings of Christians, though he provided no evidence to support his claims.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” Trump wrote.
He also said he was naming Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” a designation used by the US State Department for nations accused of “severe violations of religious freedom.”
According to Trump, two US lawmakers have been tasked with investigating the matter.
“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world!” he added.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, is almost evenly split between a Muslim-majority north and a largely Christian south.
The country’s northeast has endured more than 15 years of jihadist violence, led by the Boko Haram insurgency and its splinter group, ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province), which have killed over 40,000 people and displaced around two million.
However, analysts note that widespread banditry and communal violence across Nigeria’s north and central regions are often driven more by criminality, land disputes, and climate pressures than by religious motives.
Clashes between mostly Muslim herders and Christian farmers in the country’s Middle Belt have also been framed as sectarian, but experts say they stem mainly from competition over shrinking arable land and water resources.
The Nigerian government has consistently rejected claims of a religious genocide, insisting that insecurity in the country is multifaceted and not solely based on faith.
