Trump: Putin has ‘let me down’ as UK state visit concludes

Article arrow_drop_down

US President Donald Trump wrapped up his historic second UK state visit on Thursday with blunt words for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, saying he had “really let me down” over the war in Ukraine.

Speaking alongside Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, Trump revealed he had expected the Ukraine conflict to be the “easiest” to resolve because of his personal ties with Putin.

“He’s really let me down,” Trump said. “If the price of oil comes down, Putin’s going to drop out of that war. Europe must stop buying Russian oil.”

The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including Ukraine, Gaza, trade, migration, and technology.

‘Unbreakable bond’ and tech deal

Earlier in the day, Trump hailed America’s “unbreakable bond” with Britain as both countries signed a landmark tech deal spanning artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and nuclear energy.

The deal includes pledges of £150 billion ($205 billion) in investment from US giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Blackstone.

Starmer described Trump as a leader he “genuinely likes,” while Trump praised their cooperation despite “one of our few disagreements” over the UK’s plan to recognise a Palestinian state.

Royal treatment and protests

On Wednesday, Trump was feted at Windsor Castle, where King Charles III hosted a carriage procession, gun salutes, and a white-tie state banquet — making Trump the first US president to receive two UK state visits.

The king praised Trump’s support for Ukraine while stressing the need to protect the environment for future generations.

First Lady Melania Trump stayed in Windsor on Thursday, joining Queen Camilla and Princess Catherine for engagements, while Trump headed to Chequers.

Despite the pageantry, an estimated 5,000 protesters marched in London to oppose the visit.

Domestic shadows

Both Trump and Starmer faced political distractions linked to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whose resurfacing ties have caused renewed controversy.

Still, Starmer emerged with trade and investment wins, while Trump left with stronger alignment with the UK on Ukraine — a key goal of the trip.

Trump was scheduled to return to Washington later Thursday.

BNXN made the revelation during an interview, explaining that the cost of maintaining a developed country lifestyle in Nigeria has become extremely high. He noted that while Nigeria is a least developed country, maintaining first-world standards of living there is hard and expensive. The singer explained that for an average person, living in Lagos costs about 6.9 times more than the average salary because imported lifestyle expectations make everyday expenses disproportionately high. UK considers easing work visa rules for Nigerians and other skilled workers

The United Kingdom is reviewing proposals to ease work visa rules for Nigerians and other skilled workers from countries facing tight labour shortages in key sectors such as healthcare, technology and engineering. The proposals under consideration include adjustments to the Immigration Salary List and the introduction of new temporary shortage measures that would provide time-limited access to the Skilled Worker route for occupations below the current graduate-level requirement. These measures would allow certain occupations to be sponsored for Skilled Worker visas even if they fall below RQF Level 6 (UK bachelor's degree level), but with strict conditions that applicants cannot bring dependants to the UK. The UK government has publicly named Nigeria, India and Pakistan among the countries it is monitoring closely for immigration control purposes. The "visa brake" mechanism introduced in March 2026 can refuse certain applications based on […]

Iran says US strikes damage diplomatic efforts to end Middle East conflict

Iran's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that the United States is undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the Middle East conflict by carrying out additional strikes on targets in southern Iran and sending contradictory messages about the negotiations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a video message carried by Iranian media that the United States is damaging the diplomatic process through contradictory messages, repeated shifts in positions and demands, and repeated violations of the ceasefire. Baghaei stated that any diplomatic process is harmed by the use of force and by resorting to unlawful actions on the ground. He emphasized that the strikes contradict the spirit of ongoing negotiations mediated by international partners. In a separate statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency, Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks and said the country's armed forces have severely targeted US bases […]

Trump announced that he is in the "final stages" of negotiating an agreement with Iran, which he anticipates could be finalized within the next "two to three days," following a recent surge in hostilities. The president claimed he is in "no hurry" to finalize a peace agreement with Iran, suggesting that he would not consider making a "limited deal" only focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump: Israel and Iran Must Immediately Stop Shooting

Trump posted on his TruthSocial account: "Israel and Iran must immediately stop shooting," hours after the two nations attacked each other for the first time since a ceasefire two months ago. The appeal came as Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks against each other, marking the most serious escalation since the ceasefire that took effect on April 8. Days earlier, Trump had reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from further attacks, but Israel struck a petrochemical plant in Iran's southwest along with military targets elsewhere. Hours earlier, Trump said new strikes by Israel and Iran would not affect his administration's peace talks with Tehran, […]
