United States President Donald Trump has suggested that American ground troops could be deployed to Iran to secure the country’s stockpiles of enriched uranium.
Speaking on Saturday, Trump said there could be a scenario where US forces enter Iran to prevent its nuclear materials from being diverted or falling into the wrong hands. He linked the idea to wider US war aims, which include ensuring that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons.
According to US media reports, the president has recently discussed a limited ground deployment with senior aides and Republican allies outside the White House. In those conversations, he talked about a post war Iran where Washington helps secure uranium reserves and shapes a new relationship with any future government in Tehran.
Trump stressed that any decision to send in ground troops would require what he called a very good reason, suggesting that such a move would not be taken lightly. However, he repeated that the US is determined to cripple Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities and to degrade its support for proxy groups in the region.
Analysts say the comments add a new layer to the ongoing conflict, as previous US actions have focused mainly on air and missile strikes against Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure. A shift towards even a limited ground operation to secure uranium stockpiles would mark a significant escalation with potential long term consequences for regional security.
