Nollywood is enjoying a strong run, and January 2026 has turned cinemas across Nigeria into busy entertainment hubs. From heartfelt drama to thrilling action and epic folklore, this month offers something for every movie lover.
Here are five standout Nollywood films to look out for in cinemas this January.
Behind The Scenes
Funke Akindele delivers another emotionally charged drama in Behind The Scenes, a story that mirrors real struggles many Nigerians face. It follows Aderonke Ronky Fella Faniran, played by Scarlet Gomez, a wealthy real estate mogul whose generosity is abused by family and friends until it begins to drain her emotionally and financially.
The film features strong performances from Iyabo Ojo, Uzor Arukwe, Ibrahim Chatta, Ini Dima Okojie and Tobi Bakre as her entitled younger brother, with Destiny Etiko and Uche Montana adding more depth to this moving story about boundaries and sacrifice.
Oversabi Aunty
Oversabi Aunty is a witty but thought provoking comedy led by Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi as Toun, a church usher who sees it as her duty to correct everyone around her. Her constant interference soon causes trouble at home and leads to a chaotic wedding introduction that changes everything.
With support from Mike Ezuruonye, Jemima Osunde, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, Ngozi Ezeonu and Queen Nwokoye, the film mixes humour with lessons about judgment, self awareness and the dangers of overzealous righteousness.
Colours of Fire
Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, Colours of Fire is a visually rich epic set in a mythical past filled with war and folklore. Uzor Arukwe stars as Akinbode, a feared warrior sent to eliminate a deadly enemy but who falls in love with Moremi, played by Osas Ighodaro, from a rival tribe.
Their forbidden romance forces both communities to confront years of hatred and division. The cast, which includes Femi Branch, Ibrahim Chatta, Mercy Aigbe and Gabriel Afolayan, helps blend romance, conflict and tradition into a powerful big screen experience.
Gingerrr
Gingerrr is a fast paced heist thriller that offers suspense, style and plenty of twists. It follows four women, driven by desperation, revenge and buried secrets, as they plot a daring robbery that could completely change their lives.
Led by Bisola Aiyeola, Bukunmi Kiekie Adeaga Ilori, Bolaji Ogunmola and Wumi Toriola, who also serve as executive producers, the film features sharp dialogue and tense set pieces. Lateef Adedimeji, Timini Egbuson and Shaffy Bello deliver strong supporting roles that add weight to the story.
Agesinkole 2 King of Thieves
Femi Adebayo returns with Agesinkole 2, the anticipated sequel to his 2022 hit King of Thieves. The film revisits the legend of feared outlaw Ajeromi and plunges viewers back into a kingdom battling corruption, power struggles and ancient forces.
Odunlade Adekola is back as the troubled king, alongside Toyin Abraham, Yemi Solade, Muyiwa Ademola, Fathia Balogun Williams and veteran Adebayo Salami. Rich in Yoruba mythology, intense battles and spiritual symbolism, this sequel celebrates culture while raising the stakes for fans of the original.
