Nollywood actress Teniola Aladese has sparked debate after openly challenging the idea that domestic chores should fall mainly on women in marriages and relationships. Speaking during a recent podcast, she questioned why men still shy away from basic housework despite the fact that women now also work and “hustle” outside the home just like their partners.
“Why can’t a man wash plate?” Aladese asked, criticising the long held expectation that a woman must cook, wash dishes and handle most of the cleaning while the man simply provides financially. She argued that this imbalance becomes even more unfair when both partners contribute to the household income but only the woman is expected to shoulder the domestic burden.
The actress acknowledged that older generations may have accepted such divisions of labour but insisted that “times have changed” and that modern realities demand a more balanced approach. She maintained that helping with chores does not make a man less masculine, describing home life instead as a partnership where responsibilities should be shared, not dumped on one gender.
Aladese also highlighted the emotional and physical toll that unequal domestic work takes on women, many of whom are exhausted from combining full time jobs with unpaid housework. “Women are tired. We work too. Let’s share the load,” she said, urging couples to drop stereotypes that link housework to female identity and start designing fairer systems at home.
Her comments have reignited online conversations about gender equality in Nigerian homes, with many young people agreeing that both men and women should contribute to chores when they both earn an income. Others argue that each couple should be free to decide their own arrangements, but even critics acknowledge that societal pressure has historically pushed domestic work onto women far more than men.
