Tehran Reviewing Latest US Response as Trump Suggests He Can Wait

Article arrow_drop_down

Iran announced on Thursday that it is reviewing Washington’s latest position on ending the war after US President Donald Trump said he is prepared to wait a few days to get the right answers from Tehran but warned of renewed attacks if no deal is reached.

“We have received US views and are reviewing them,” Iranian state-run agency Nour News quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei as saying. Pakistan which hosted peace talks last month and is acting as the conduit for messages between the two sides continues to mediate between Tehran and Washington with several rounds of communication having taken place.

When questioned about how long he would be willing to wait Trump replied “It could be a few days but it could go very quickly.” The president reiterated his determination not to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.

President Trump said the United States was ready to proceed with further attacks if Iran did not agree to a peace deal but suggested Washington could wait a few days to get the right answers from Tehran.

The ongoing conflict has already caused widespread disruption to energy supplies and maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. Both sides continue to compete for control over the strategically important waterway with about 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas supply normally passing through it.

Iran wants the war to end before discussing nuclear matters while Washington insists nuclear concessions must come first creating a structural problem in the negotiations. The US has previously presented a 14-point memorandum that would suspend nuclear enrichment lift sanctions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
