Son Makes Impact in MLS Debut as LAFC Rallies for 2-2 Draw Against Chicago Fire

South Korean superstar Son Heung-min made his highly anticipated Major League Soccer debut for Los Angeles FC on Saturday, playing a pivotal role in his team’s comeback 2-2 draw against the Chicago Fire at SeatGeek Stadium.

The former Tottenham Hotspur captain, who joined LAFC last week in a record $26 million deal, entered the match as a 61st-minute substitute with the score level at 1-1. While he did not find the net, his influence was immediate—earning a crucial 77th-minute penalty after being fouled by Chicago’s Carlos Terán. Denis Bouanga converted the spot-kick in the 81st minute to secure the draw, with VAR confirming the decision after initial hesitation from the referee.

“It was a clear penalty—no doubt about it,” Son said post-match. “I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t win, but the team fought hard. I’m happy to make my debut, and hopefully, the goals will come soon.”

The 32-year-old forward, who left Spurs as their fifth all-time top scorer (173 goals in 454 appearances), nearly marked his debut with a late winner, only to see his injury-time effort blocked. His arrival electrified the crowd, with many fans donning his jersey and waving South Korean flags in support.

Chicago had taken an early lead through Terán’s 11th-minute header before Ryan Hollingshead equalized for LAFC eight minutes later. Jonathan Bamba restored the Fire’s advantage in the 70th minute, but Son’s intervention ensured the visitors left with a point.

LAFC, now fifth in the Western Conference, will face the New England Revolution next weekend, with Son hopeful for his first start. “I felt good today,” he said. “Now it’s about building fitness and making an even bigger impact.”

The match drew significant attention as Son’s MLS debut marks a new chapter for one of Asia’s greatest football exports. His next home game at BMO Stadium will be on August 31 against Western Conference leaders San Diego FC.

Relief for ADC, AP as Appeal Court stops deregistration order

Several opposition political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Accord Party (AP), have secured temporary relief after the Court of Appeal halted the enforcement of a Federal High Court judgment ordering their deregistration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Earlier in the week, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for failing to meet the constitutional thresholds required to remain on the register of political parties. The trial court held that the parties breached Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers INEC to deregister political parties that fail to win any elective seat or secure at least 25 per cent of the votes in relevant elections at federal, state or local government […]
