On May 26, 2025, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), appeared before the Accra High Court to face charges related to the controversial $2 million SkyTrain project. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted bail set at GH₵10 million with two sureties justified by landed properties in Accra.

Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi faces four charges:
- Count 1: Conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit, wilfully causing financial loss to the Republic – Not Guilty
- Count 2: Wilfully causing financial loss to the state – Not Guilty
- Count 4: Conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit, intentional dissipation of public funds – Not Guilty
- Count 6: Intentional dissipation of public funds – Not Guilty
hese charges stem from a $2 million payment made in 2019 by GIIF to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for preliminary work on the SkyTrain project, which was never realized. The prosecution alleges that this payment was made without proper board approval and due diligence.
Bail Conditions and Health Considerations
The court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, granted bail considering Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi’s advanced age of 80 and health challenges, including recent hip surgery and a heart condition requiring ongoing medical attention. As part of the bail conditions, he is required to:
- Deposit his travel documents, including his passport, with the court registry.
- Report to the police once every week until further notice.
His legal team argued that he is not a flight risk, citing his permanent residence in Pokuase, Greater Accra Region, and his history of public service, including roles as Minister of Education and Minister of Ports and Harbours under President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Next Steps in Legal Proceedings
The case has been adjourned to June 10, 2025, for a case management conference, where the court will set timelines for pre-trial processes and determine the course of the trial. The SkyTrain case has attracted significant public interest due to its implications for public procurement and accountability in Ghana.
