Shock and disbelief dominate the atmosphere in Crans-Montana as residents and visitors struggle to come to terms with the devastating fire that struck the heart of this renowned Swiss ski resort.
For many who know the town well, the tragedy feels deeply unreal. Crans-Montana is widely regarded as a prestigious and family-friendly destination, known for its strong safety standards, modern infrastructure and year-round tourism. In winter, it attracts skiers from around the world, while summer brings golfers, hikers and mountain bikers. It is a place associated with leisure, affluence and security — not disaster.
Le Constellation, the bar at the centre of the tragedy, is a long-established venue located in the middle of the resort, near the cinema. Popular with both locals and tourists, it has traditionally been a gathering place for young people and visitors enjoying the nightlife. Many are now anxiously trying to determine whether friends or acquaintances were among those inside when the fire broke out.
Several witnesses described confusion in the early hours after the incident. One British tourist said he initially assumed the sound of sirens meant partygoers had simply overindulged on New Year’s Eve. The reality, however, was far more serious.
By the morning, the usually vibrant centre of Crans-Montana had fallen silent. Streets that are normally busy with skiers and holidaymakers were cordoned off, guarded by police. The scale of the security perimeter, along with road closures and emergency activity, made it clear that the town was facing a major catastrophe.
As the day progressed, more people gathered near the cordon, some still wearing ski gear, asking questions and sharing information. Small groups formed as stories emerged of desperate escapes, severe burns and people breaking windows to flee the flames.
Flowers were laid outside Le Constellation, as residents and visitors stood quietly, trying to reconcile the image of a peaceful Alpine resort with the scenes of devastation from the night before. For many, the shock remains profound, underlining how unimaginable such a tragedy feels in a place long seen as safe and carefree.

Apple Signals Product Price Hikes Amid Chip Costs
Apple is preparing to increase the prices of some of its products as rising memory chip costs continue to put pressure on the technology giant's manufacturing expenses. The company's outgoing chief executive, Tim Cook, said soaring memory prices have made it increasingly difficult for Apple to absorb higher production costs, describing the current market situation as unsustainable. Although Cook did not specify when the price increases would take effect, nor identify which products could be affected, his comments have fueled speculation that future Apple devices may carry higher price tags. It remains unclear whether the anticipated iPhone 18 lineup, expected later this year, will be impacted. Memory chips play a critical role in smartphones, computers and other electronic devices. However, growing demand for artificial intelligence technologies has significantly increased the need for advanced memory components, pushing prices sharply higher across […]

Bolivia’s president declares state of emergency after weeks of protests
Bolivia's President Rodrigo Paz has declared a nationwide state of emergency to free the country's roads from blockades after over six weeks of protests demanding his resignation. Paz announced the emergency measure early Saturday, stating it is to give freedom back to the people and liberate Bolivia from those using political conflict to block roads and harm the population. The president called the situation an organized attempt to destabilize democracy, saying the decision came after exhausting all avenues of dialogue. The emergency declaration gives Paz expanded constitutional powers to restore order, including the option to deploy armed forces to dismantle blockades. The order is effective immediately, but Paz must inform Congress within 24 hours, and Congress has up to 72 hours to endorse or dismiss the declaration. The conflict erupted in May after Paz scrapped two-decade-old fuel subsidies, causing gas […]

Trump unveils Qatar-gifted presidential jet, calls it flying White House
US President Donald Trump has unveiled a luxurious Boeing 747-8 jet gifted by Qatar as the new Air Force One, proclaiming at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, that the aircraft has been converted into a flying White House with unprecedented luxury. The jet, which Trump says is virtually double the size of the previous model, is painted in white, maroon and navy blue, with Trump personally selecting the red, white and blue paint scheme as a departure from the traditional light blue. The Qatari royal family donated the luxury Boeing 747-8 to the US Department of Defense in May 2025, intending for it to be integrated into the Air Force One fleet that serves to transport the president. Trump has said the Qatari jet would serve as a bridge aircraft to transport the president until the new fleet of Boeing planes […]

US envoy Witkoff headed to Switzerland for Iran talks — reports
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Switzerland where the first round of talks with Iran on a potential nuclear deal is expected to take place, a US official told Axios. US official said Trump's envoy Jared Kushner is already in Switzerland for the negotiations, which were supposed to start Friday but were postponed because of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi were headed to Switzerland for talks, as a ceasefire in Lebanon appeared to revive efforts to turn the interim Iran war pact into a lasting regional deal. The development follows a 14-point memorandum the US and Iran signed this week to halt fighting and open a 60-day window to resolve disputes over Iran's nuclear programme and other thorny issues needed for a durable deal. With the ceasefire in […]

US says it needs $80bn for Iran war, other bills
The US Department of Defense has told lawmakers it needs about $80 billion in emergency funding to cover costs from the Iran war as well as other non-war-related bills, according to briefings cited in US media reports. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg communicated the request to members of Congress in phone calls this week, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that the $80 billion figure is now the Pentagon’s target for an urgent supplemental package. The planned request would not be limited to the military alone, as the full US supplemental proposal is expected to include money for the Pentagon alongside non-defense priorities such as farm support and disaster relief. US officials previously indicated that the Iran war has cost around $25 billion so far, marking the first official estimate of the financial toll of the conflict. Earlier projections from […]
