Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw says he and the entire Teranga Lions squad do not support Sadio Mane’s suggestion that Sunday’s AFCON 2025 final against Morocco could be his last appearance at the tournament. Thiaw insisted that Mane made the comment “in the heat of the moment” and stressed that “Senegal needs him” for the years and competitions ahead.
The coach praised Mane’s influence in the semi final win over Egypt and described him as a rare player whose experience and leadership remain vital as Senegal chase more titles and aim to qualify for future World Cups. He expressed hope that the 32‑year‑old forward will reconsider any plans to step back from AFCON duty and instead target more tournaments with the national team.
Thiaw, who replaced long‑serving boss Aliou Cisse in late 2024, said maintaining continuity around key leaders like Mane is crucial as Senegal seeks to defend its status among Africa’s elite.
