Fuji musician Saheed Osupa has explained why he uses traditional spiritual practices, often called juju, to support his personal life and music career.
He spoke during the 52nd birthday celebration of veteran actor Fatai Odua, popularly known as Lalude, held on March 30. In his remarks, Osupa encouraged people to consider such practices to improve their focus and memory.
A video of his comments went viral on Wednesday, drawing wide reactions online. Osupa clarified that he does not see voodoo as something evil, but as a tool that can enhance well being and professional progress.
He added that he performs daily obeisance to Ifa, which he believes complements normal efforts people make to become successful.
According to him, some people advised him to publicly deny any link to fetish practices, but he refused. He stressed that he has never used juju to harm anyone, but only to seek progress in life.
Osupa questioned why people criticise traditional practices while accepting everyday remedies such as pain relief drugs, arguing that everyone looks for ways to live a more comfortable life.
He also claimed that many people secretly rely on spiritual means, while he chooses to be open about his beliefs. He dismissed suggestions that he depends only on the Bible and the Quran, saying such claims are not true.

Ghana summons South Africa’s envoy over ‘xenophobic incidents’
Ghana has summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner in Accra over what it describes as a series of “xenophobic incidents” targeting Ghanaian nationals. In a statement issued on Thursday, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa raised concerns after videos emerged online showing Ghanaians being harassed in parts of South Africa. The ministry cited an incident in KwaZulu Natal where a Ghanaian legal resident was confronted and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.” The statement warned of “escalating tensions” and advised Ghanaian citizens in affected areas to remain indoors for their safety where necessary. It noted that recent anti migrant protests and intimidation had heightened fears among foreign nationals. During his meeting with South Africa’s envoy Thando Dalamba, Ablakwa recalled Ghana’s historic support for the anti apartheid struggle and stressed that unprovoked harassment […]

Influencer culture impacting music quality in Nigeria, says Zlatan Ibile
Afrobeats star Zlatan Ibile says the rise of influencer culture is reshaping Nigeria’s entertainment industry and affecting the overall quality of music being released. Speaking on the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Shopsydoo, he noted that making music is no longer the preserve of professional artists, as skit makers, pranksters, TikTok creators and other social media influencers now record songs that quickly go viral. According to him, musicians once dominated celebrity culture, but influencers and content creators now share the spotlight and can turn almost any track into a hit through their online reach. “It used to be that artists were the celebrities, but now TikTokers, influencers, and content creators are celebrities. That is why you can see an influencer or skit maker drop a song and it blows up,” Zlatan said. He stressed that this shift helps explain why songs […]

‘Jamaica started Afrobeats’, says Rapper Fat Joe
American rapper Fat Joe has stirred controversy by claiming that Afrobeats originated from Jamaica. The veteran hip hop star made the remark on a recent episode of his “Joe and Jada” podcast while hosting Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton. “Jamaica started Afrobeats. Even though everything comes from Africa,” Fat Joe declared during the conversation. Buju Banton did not directly challenge the statement. Instead, he steered the discussion towards the roots of reggaeton, crediting Panamanian rapper El General as a pioneer whose work helped shape the genre and influence others. However, Afrobeats is widely recognised as a sound that emerged from West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Ghana. The genre draws heavily from Afrobeat, the revolutionary music style created in the 1970s by Nigerian icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, while blending highlife, hip hop, R&B and other global influences. Fat Joe’s comment has […]
