A senior figure in Russia’s military intelligence has been seriously wounded after a shooting in Moscow, adding to a growing list of targeted attacks against high-ranking security officials since the start of the war in Ukraine.
The victim, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, was shot several times inside a residential building on Volokolamsk Highway, in the north-west of the Russian capital. He was rushed to hospital, but authorities have not disclosed details about his condition.
Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that a criminal case for attempted murder has been opened. According to officials, the attacker escaped the scene, prompting an extensive investigation that includes reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses. Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots early in the morning.
Vladimir Alexeyev is a prominent figure within Russia’s security establishment. During the war in Ukraine, he was involved in negotiations linked to the 2022 siege of Mariupol and later took part in talks with Yevgeny Prigozhin during the short-lived Wagner mutiny in 2023. He has also been under EU and UK sanctions, notably in connection with allegations involving the GRU.
The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the incident. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that authorities hope the general will survive and recover.
While no group has claimed responsibility, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of being behind the attack. Ukrainian officials have not commented. Kyiv has, however, acknowledged involvement in some past operations targeting Russian military figures.
The shooting comes amid heightened security concerns in Moscow. In recent years, several senior officers have been attacked, including the 2024 killing of General Igor Kirillov in a bombing outside his apartment, and the death of another GRU officer in a car explosion in late 2025.
These incidents underline the increasing vulnerability of Russia’s senior military leadership, even in the heart of the capital, as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
