Renewed Hope Patriotic Movement plans national football competition

Article arrow_drop_down

The Renewed Hope Patriotic Movement has unveiled plans to organise a national football competition aimed at engaging young Nigerians and promoting unity across the country. The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and seeks to use sports as a tool for youth empowerment, peacebuilding and national cohesion.

According to the organisers, the tournament – expected to run across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory – will feature grassroots teams drawn from local government areas and community clubs. It is designed not only to discover football talent for higher levels, but also to serve as a social movement that encourages discipline, teamwork and constructive engagement among young people.

Earlier this year, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, was invested as patron of the broader Renewed Hope Unity Cup project at a ceremony in Abuja. NFF officials say the federation will actively monitor the competition to identify outstanding players who can be invited into various national youth and senior teams.

The movement’s coordinators explain that the national football competition will also create opportunities for corporate sponsorships, local tourism and small businesses that typically benefit from matchday activities. They add that the project will prioritise fair play, inclusiveness and transparency in team selection and officiating, to ensure credibility and broad acceptance.

Organisers have begun consultations with state sports commissions, football associations and community leaders to fine tune the format, schedule and hosting arrangements. With several states and hundreds of grassroots clubs already indicating interest, the Renewed Hope Patriotic Movement believes the tournament can grow into one of Nigeria’s flagship youth football events.

Missing World Cup will be loss of major diplomatic asset – Iran FA

Iran’s football federation has warned that missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup would amount to losing a major diplomatic asset for the country, as debates continue over Tehran’s participation amid heightened political tensions. Federation president Mehdi Taj stressed that Iran’s presence at the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada would provide a rare soft power platform at a time of strained relations with Western governments. Taj reiterated that the World Cup is organised and “hosted” by FIFA, not by any single country, pushing back against efforts to politicise Iran’s participation. He argued that football and diplomacy are intertwined, and that Iran’s national team represents an important channel for engagement with global audiences beyond formal government contacts. In recent weeks, Iranian officials have demanded a series of guarantees from FIFA and the 2026 co hosts over visas, security and […]
