Russia has carried out a new test of a nuclear-capable underwater drone, President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday, marking the country’s second nuclear weapons test within days despite warnings from US President Donald Trump.
During a visit to a military hospital treating soldiers wounded in Ukraine, Putin said the test involved the “Poseidon” unmanned underwater vehicle, which is equipped with a nuclear power unit. He claimed the drone torpedo could travel faster than any submarine and was impossible to intercept.
“There is no way to intercept this system,” Putin said, adding that Poseidon can reach any continent and dive deeper than existing underwater weapons.
According to Russia’s state news agency TASS, the drone can operate at depths greater than one kilometre and travel at speeds of up to 70 knots while remaining undetectable. It can also carry a nuclear warhead of up to two megatons. The weapon was first tested in 2018.
The test came just days after Putin personally oversaw the launch of another advanced nuclear-capable weapon, the Burevestnik cruise missile, which he described as having “unlimited range.” Trump criticised that test as “not appropriate” and urged Putin to end the war in Ukraine instead of escalating military developments.
“He ought to get the war in Ukraine ended. A war that should have taken one week is now soon in its fourth year,” Trump said.
Tensions between Washington and Moscow have grown as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict stall. The US president cancelled a planned summit with Putin in Budapest last week, citing Russia’s unwillingness to compromise.
The United States also imposed new sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, saying talks with Moscow “don’t go anywhere.”
Putin first revealed the Poseidon and Burevestnik projects in 2018, describing them as symbols of Russia’s advanced defense capabilities and resistance to Western pressure.
