Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka says a clear project under manager Frank Lampard, the chance to play regularly and family reasons convinced him to join Coventry City instead of other top flight clubs. The 28 year old moved from Brentford to the EFL Championship side on loan until the end of the season, with an option to stay if Coventry win promotion.
Onyeka revealed that talks over the transfer began early in January but became serious after a direct phone call with Lampard about two weeks before the window closed. He said their discussion showed him that Coventry is “going in the right direction” and hungry to move up, which matched his ambitions.
The midfielder added that staying in England was important for his young family and made Coventry more attractive than overseas options. Reports linked him with interest from Premier League side Sheffield United and Spanish club Valencia, but he felt Coventry offered the best balance of stability, game time and proximity to home.
Onyeka admitted he needed a fresh start after playing only 88 minutes for Brentford in the first half of the season despite a strong Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Nigeria. He believes regular football with a promotion chasing team will help him maintain his place in the Super Eagles squad.
Describing his style, Onyeka said he brings strength, ball winning, forward runs and intensity in training and matches. He praised fellow Coventry midfielders Matt Grimes, Victor Torp, Josh Eccles and Jamie Allen, saying they all offer different qualities that can make the team more competitive in the Championship title race.

Bullets before ballots: insecurity threatens 2027 polls; 5,272 killed in 5 months
Seven months to the 2027 general elections, worsening insecurity across Nigeria is casting a shadow over preparations for what should be a watershed democratic exercise, with a staggering 5,272 people killed in just five months amid a resurgence of terrorist attacks and banditry. Before the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections, rising insecurity across parts of Nigeria has become a major source of national concern, undermining public confidence in the electoral process. The country's security situation has continued to deteriorate with increasing attacks on civilians, schools, and military formations, raising serious questions about whether the elections will hold as scheduled. Data from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025 showed that Nigeria recorded 171 terror attacks in 2025, representing a 43 per cent increase from the 120 attacks recorded in 2024. Terror-related deaths also rose from 513 in 2024 […]

Israel says it won’t withdraw troops from Lebanon, Syria, Gaza
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared that Israeli troops will remain indefinitely in "security zones" in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria, marking a major policy shift in the country's military approach to border security. Katz emphasized that unlike previous instances, the Israeli military is not retreating from areas that have been cleared and taken, stating that troops will remain in the security zones acting as a buffer between adversaries and Israeli communities "regardless of whether the situation in Gaza is temporary or permanent" – similar to the approach in Lebanon and Syria. The defense minister's announcement comes after Israel unilaterally expanded its frontiers in the war unleashed by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, and the military strengthens its control over various occupied regions. Israel says it must maintain control of what it refers to as security zones to […]
