Nigeria, China boost ties with film and culture exchange

Article arrow_drop_down

Nigeria and China have renewed their commitment to strengthening cultural and economic diplomacy through film and creative industries.

This pledge was emphasized at a symposium in Lagos themed “Promoting Cultural and Economic Diplomacy Through Film.” The event was organized by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), the Chinese Consulate General, and other stakeholders.

Speaking on behalf of NIIA Director-General Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, Research Professor Femi Otubanjo highlighted the historic role of culture and film in diplomacy, noting how Nollywood and Afrobeats are now reshaping global perceptions of Nigeria.
“Today, Nigerian music and Nollywood are taking over arenas worldwide, creating not only cultural influence but also significant economic activities,” he said.

Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, described film as a “universal language that transcends borders.” She praised Nollywood’s global impact and referenced China’s century-long film tradition and its $6 billion industry. Yuqing also recalled the success of the 2023 Chinese Film Festival in Lagos.

Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, urged practical cooperation in production, training, and infrastructure. He proposed co-production treaties, technical exchanges, and collaborations in animation, soundstage development, and community cinemas.
“When Nigeria and China collaborate through film, they are not just telling stories. They are shaping global narratives and strengthening bilateral relations,” Husseini said.

Director of Studies at NIIA, Prof. Efem Ubi, added that culture and entertainment are powerful diplomatic tools that can reshape international perceptions of Nigeria. He called for more deliberate efforts to project positive narratives about the country.

The symposium, co-hosted with Trim Network and MESPA, also featured screenings of Nigerian films such as Ramona Yahya’s Tradition and Ijeoma Richard’s documentary Úru ígbă bòi, reinforcing film’s role as a bridge between nations.

Commonwealth Games: Amusan storms into 100m hurdles final

Tobi Amusan delivered a commanding run in the opening semifinal, clocking a wind‑assisted 12.19 seconds to top the field and book her place in Thursday’s final. The former world champion finished comfortably ahead of South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12.50s) and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill (12.69s) in her heat. Although Amusan’s time is the fastest ever recorded in the event at the Commonwealth Games, it will not count as a Games record because it was aided by a +3.8m/s tailwind, above the legal +2.0m/s limit for record purposes. Amusan looked in complete control throughout the race, pulling away from the pack to secure automatic qualification for the final later on Thursday. A victory in the final would add the Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title to her collection of international honours and further cement her status as one of the world’s leading […]

Trump immigration crackdown: US arrests visa overstayers at airports

The United States has begun arresting foreign nationals with expired visas at airports across the country, marking an expansion of President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement campaign. Reports based on internal US Department of Homeland Security documents and interviews with immigration lawyers say Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have recently detained travellers at check‑in counters, security zones, boarding gates and arrival terminals in more than a dozen airports. Those targeted include spouses of US citizens, skilled foreign workers awaiting visa extensions, former exchange visitors and other migrants with pending immigration applications. The arrests represent a significant expansion of an existing collaboration between the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and ICE, which previously focused mainly on individuals with outstanding deportation orders. Lawyers say the programme now covers people whose visas have expired even if they have ongoing, lawful applications to remain in […]

Tinubu made the statement on Tuesday during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at the State House in Abuja. He said he had asked for the job and was prepared for the political battle, but would not offer opponents “a red carpet.” “I’m ready, but I won’t give them a red carpet.
