President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for a new accommodation project for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), signaling a renewed push to improve the living conditions of military personnel and modernise ageing barracks infrastructure.
The sod-cutting ceremony took place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Burma Camp during activities marking the Armed Forces’ end-of-year West African Social Activities (WASSA) celebrations. The event was held at the forecourt of the GAF Public Relations Department.
The housing initiative forms part of a broader regeneration programme aimed at transforming the Burma Camp enclave. According to officials, the project will replace outdated, low-rise residential blocks with modern high-rise apartment complexes. This redesign is expected to free up more than half of the camp’s existing land space, allowing for better planning and improved infrastructure.
The first phase of the project is expected to deliver about 200 housing units. Funding for the initial construction will be supported through a self-help fundraising exercise scheduled for April, reflecting a blended approach to financing military welfare projects.
In addition to launching the housing project, President Mahama presented a fleet of operational vehicles to the Armed Forces to enhance logistics and mobility. The vehicles included pick-ups, buses, and Land Cruiser units, intended to strengthen operational readiness across various deployments.
Addressing military personnel and invited guests, the President commended the Armed Forces for their role in safeguarding peace and stability in a sub-region facing evolving and increasingly complex security challenges. He noted that Ghana’s reputation as a stable democracy is closely tied to the discipline, professionalism, and sacrifices of its military.
President Mahama further подчеркed that the Ghana Armed Forces remain central not only to national security, but also to civil support operations, humanitarian response, and national development efforts.
Responding on behalf of the military, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, expressed appreciation for the President’s continued support and leadership. He described government backing as critical to the Armed Forces’ ability to fulfil their constitutional mandate effectively.
He also thanked the government for prioritising the welfare, preparedness, and capacity-building of the GAF, particularly at a time when regional security demands are intensifying.
The ceremony was attended by senior government and military officials, including the Minister of Finance and Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka.
