Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris has formally requested the establishment of a permanent Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational base in the state to enhance security operations against Lakurawa terrorists and bandits.
The Governor made the appeal during a meeting with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. He emphasized the strategic importance of an air base given Kebbi’s borders with Niger and Benin Republics, where terrorist groups are active.
“Having an Air Force base at our international airport, one of the best in Northern Nigeria, would significantly boost our counterterrorism efforts,” Governor Idris stated. “Aircraft support has proven critical in neutralizing threats when ground troops are engaged.”
The Governor highlighted existing security partnerships, including provision of vehicles and logistics to security agencies, which have improved safety in some areas. However, he stressed that permanent air capabilities would provide a stronger deterrent against cross-border incursions by armed groups operating from Sokoto, Zamfara, and Niger State.
Air Marshal Abubakar acknowledged Kebbi’s strategic importance for national security and economic development. “The Lakurawa threat demands immediate attention to preserve Kebbi’s longstanding peace,” he said, commending President Tinubu’s support in acquiring new aircraft to strengthen national security.
The Air Force chief pledged continued collaboration with state authorities to combat insecurity. The proposed base would enhance rapid response capabilities across Nigeria’s northwestern region, where terrorist activities have disrupted agricultural production and economic activities.
Security analysts note that establishing an air base in Kebbi could create a vital security corridor along Nigeria’s northwestern border, complementing existing military operations in the region. The state government has offered to provide necessary infrastructure support if the proposal is approved.

Iranian sailors leave Sri Lanka after attack
More than 200 Iranian sailors who had been stranded in Sri Lanka following a naval incident have now returned home after spending over a month in the country. Court orders final forfeiture of $13m linked to Oceangate Engineering
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of 13 million dollars linked to Oceangate Engineering Oil and Gas Ltd, a company associated with businesswoman Aisha Achimugu. Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for the money to be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. Bandits raid Kwara church, abduct worshippers during service
Armed bandits have attacked a church in Kwara State, abducting several worshippers during a service.
