Inter Milan Names Cristian Chivu as New Head Coach
Italian football giants Inter Milan have confirmed the appointment of Cristian Chivu as their new head coach, marking a bold new chapter for the club ahead of the Club World Cup 2025 .
Chivu, a former Inter defender and three-time Serie A champion with the club, has signed a contract running until June 30, 2027 .
“Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team,” the club announced in an official statement.
The move comes after Inter failed to secure Cesc Fàbregas from Como and amid ongoing fallout from the team’s heavy 5–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final earlier in June.
A Risky Gamble on a Coaching Rookie
At just 44 years old , Chivu steps into one of Europe’s most demanding coaching jobs—only months after starting his senior coaching career at Parma , where he replaced Fabio Pechia in February and helped the club avoid relegation.
He has signed a deal worth €2.5 million per season , making him one of the more affordable managerial appointments this summer.
Despite his lack of experience, Chivu brings deep knowledge of the Inter culture and history. He won the 2010 Champions League with the club as a player and remains a fan favorite.
This decision marks a significant risk—but also a fresh start—for a club looking to recover from a disappointing end to the 2024/25 season.
First Test: Monterrey in Club World Cup
Chivu’s debut will come quickly. His first match in charge is against Monterrey in the Club World Cup quarterfinals , set to take place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California next week.
He inherits a squad that looked fatigued and disorganized during the loss to PSG, with many questioning whether the team can bounce back under new leadership.
Still, Chivu expressed confidence and gratitude in a social media post:
“I thank the club, staff, players, and fans for having believed in me and our project.”
Inzaghi Exits After Heavy Final Defeat
Simone Inzaghi left the club following the Champions League final disaster, taking up a role with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Inzaghi now leads a side that includes Karim Benzema and will face Chivu’s Inter in the same Club World Cup tournament.
This creates an unusual twist, with two former Inter coaches now facing off on the global stage.
