The Golden Globe Awards will take place on Sunday night in Los Angeles, bringing together some of the most talked-about films and television shows of the past year as Hollywood’s awards season moves into high gear.
Among the strongest film contenders are One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value and Sinners, which lead a diverse list of nominees that also includes Hamnet, Frankenstein and Wicked: For Good. This year’s ceremony also introduces a new prize for best podcast, reflecting the growing influence of audio storytelling.
The Golden Globes are seen as an important preview of what may happen at the Oscars, whose nominations will be announced later this month. Unlike many other awards, the Globes divide film categories into drama and musical or comedy, allowing more films and performances to be recognised.
One Battle After Another leads the field with the highest number of nominations. The film, which follows a former revolutionary whose daughter is abducted, has been widely praised by critics. Close behind are the Norwegian drama Sentimental Value and the dark vampire story Sinners, set in 1930s Mississippi.
Other major nominees include Hamnet, based on the novel about the family tragedy behind Shakespeare’s famous play, and Frankenstein, which offers a more emotional take on Mary Shelley’s classic. Wicked: For Good continues the musical journey of Elphaba, while It Was Just an Accident, winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, explores revenge and trauma after imprisonment.
In the acting races, some of the biggest names in Hollywood are competing. Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio are both nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy for Marty Supreme and One Battle After Another respectively. Michael B Jordan is a strong contender in the drama category for Sinners, while Jessie Buckley is widely tipped to win best drama actress for her performance in Hamnet.
Television is also in focus, with series such as Adolescence, The Pitt and The Studio earning nominations. Adolescence, a Netflix drama that has already won several major awards, continues to dominate attention despite being released nearly a year ago.
The ceremony will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who returns after a highly praised performance last year. Known for her sharp humour and fearless jokes, she is expected to once again bring a lively tone to the evening.
The Golden Globes will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with millions of viewers around the world watching to see which films and stars take home early awards that could shape the rest of the season.
