FG launches food relief, unveils new poverty exit plan

Article arrow_drop_down

The Federal Government has launched an emergency food and nutrition relief programme in Niger State and unveiled a new long term strategy to lift vulnerable households out of poverty.

The intervention is part of the Presidential Initiative for Food and Nutrition Assistance and is being implemented through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

At the flag off in Niger State, officials began distributing bags of grains and nutrition support items to vulnerable families affected by rising food prices, insecurity, and loss of livelihoods.

The government said the programme is designed not only to provide immediate food assistance but also to link beneficiaries to broader social protection schemes.

Under the new framework, households receiving food support are expected to be enrolled into conditional cash transfers, livelihood support, skills training, and small business programmes.

The Federal Government is also expanding and updating the National Social Register to better identify and track poor and vulnerable families across the country.

Officials stressed that the goal is to ensure that families supported with food today are assisted to become more resilient and eventually exit poverty, rather than returning to crisis after each relief phase.

They acknowledged funding and humanitarian challenges but assured that efforts would continue to prevent widening gaps in assistance and to coordinate with states and partners for sustainable impact.

GehGeh criticises Peller’s marriage to Jarvis says money isn’t everything

Social media personality Ojaigho Prosper, widely known as GehGeh, has criticised TikTok star Habeeb Hamzat, popularly called Peller, over his decision to marry Elizabeth Aminata, also known as Jarvis, despite acknowledging Peller’s financial success. GehGeh reacted via his X (Twitter) account on Sunday, questioning whether financial stability alone should be enough reason to enter marriage. He argued that other important factors such as mental, physical, emotional and spiritual readiness must be considered before making such a commitment. He wrote, “Y’all are justifying his act with ‘he has the money, allow him’. But y’all failed to ask yourself if he’s ready mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.” He then added, “Everything isn’t all about the money.” GehGeh also expressed disappointment that Peller went ahead with the marriage plans despite his advice, saying Peller is still young and has more personal growth ahead. The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been praised for its exciting moments and viral fan experiences, but at least five matches that fans expected to be thrilling instead delivered disappointing results. One of the biggest disappointments was Spain’s goalless draw against underdog Cape Verde, a team ranked 65 places below Spain. Spain was one of the top favorites for the tournament, and many fans expected a high-scoring victory, but the match ended 0–0 in a lacklustre performance. Cristiano Ronaldo’s largely inconspicuous performance in DR Congo’s 1–1 draw with Portugal also left many viewers wondering whether he is past his prime. Despite high hopes for Ronaldo’s influence, he struggled to make a major impact as DR Congo scored its first-ever World Cup goal through Yoane Wissa. Mexico’s match against South Korea, which was expected to be a key battle for the […]

The national railway operator SNCF cancelled 71 long‑distance train services since Wednesday, citing risks of air‑conditioning failures and track damage from extreme heat. Both France and Belgium have reduced rail services, particularly affecting commuter lines in and around Paris. Belgium's national railway operator SNCB declared that some peak‑hour trains would be cancelled on Monday and Tuesday to minimize the risk of breakdowns obstructing the […]

SERAP demands N110bn refund for luxury cars and unlawful allowances

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has demanded that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas refund N110 billion to the public treasury after a Federal High Court in Lagos declared the National Assembly's spending on luxury SUVs and unlawful allowances illegal. The court ruling on the 5th of May came in a suit SERAP filed in 2023, challenging the 10th Assembly's plan to spend N40 billion on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars and N70 billion as holiday allowances for new lawmakers. Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court held that the N110 billion spend violated section 57(4) of the Public Procurement Act, 2007, the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, and lawmakers' constitutional oath of office. The judgment found that the spending breached the principle that public funds must be used judiciously, especially at a time when […]
