Stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative sector have called on the Federal Government to prioritise the teaching of classical music in schools as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s creative arts industry.
The appeal was made at the annual Symphony and Bcanto performance night in Abuja, organised to mark Classical Music Month.
Programme organiser, Mrs. Nana Gbolahan, said music should not remain confined to elite circles but be made accessible nationwide, starting from the grassroots.
“The government can assist by introducing music into schools. Currently, the school curriculum does not have music as a separate subject. If we merge classical music with our indigenous sounds, just as we did with Afrobeat, Nigeria can create a new genre of classical music,” she said.
Gbolahan added that increased awareness would not only promote cultural exchange but also help Nigeria gain recognition abroad for blending African traditions with classical music.
Also speaking, Wing Commander Ayodeji Ayanbode, Director of Music at the Nigerian Air Force, who led the Air Force Band at the event, described classical music as “entertaining and soul-inspiring.”
He urged the government to catch talents young by introducing structured music education at the primary and secondary school levels.
“By doing so, we will discover talents, boost the prominence of classical music in Nigeria, and strengthen the creative industry,” he noted.
The Abuja event featured performances of classical pieces in both local and international languages, highlighting the unifying and therapeutic power of music.

DR Congo’s well-known supporter Michel Kuka Mboladinga returned to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after completing an Ebola-related quarantine. His return brought extra attention and emotion to DR Congo’s World Cup campaign. Fans at the stadium and viewers online welcomed his presence, which has become one of the tournament’s most memorable fan stories. However, DR Congo did not get the result they wanted, as Colombia defeated them 1-0. Even with the loss, Mboladinga’s return added a strong human and cultural moment to the tournament, […]

Dangote Refinery denies petrol export and re-import claims
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied claims that its petrol is being exported to Togo and then brought back into Nigeria. The company said the allegation is false and does not reflect its business operations. It explained that the claims are not supported by trade records, commercial logic, or its normal supply process. According to the refinery, its sales contracts do not allow the resale or re-importation of its products into Nigeria. The company said this rule is part of its standard compliance system. Dangote Refinery also said the alleged trade route would not make economic sense. It noted that shipping fuel from Nigeria to Lomé and back into Nigeria would add extra logistics costs that would make such a plan unprofitable. The company said no rational producer would spend additional money on shipping, storage, financing and handling only for the […]

State police debate advances in Senate
Nigeria’s debate over state police has moved forward after President Bola Tinubu sent a constitutional amendment bill to the Senate. The proposal seeks to create a legal framework for state police as part of wider efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security system. Lawmakers say the plan could help states respond faster to local security challenges. The bill was read in the Senate and referred to the Constitution Review Committee for further work. The committee is expected to examine the proposal and report back to the Senate before any final decision is made. Supporters of state police say the current federal policing structure is no longer enough to handle the country’s growing security problems. They believe giving states more control over policing could improve response time and intelligence gathering. However, the proposal is still subject to more legislative steps. For the bill […]

Russia says nuclear weapons are key to preventing global war
Russia has said nuclear weapons remain the main shield against a possible global war. The comment came from the Kremlin amid growing concerns about global insecurity and a new arms race. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the world’s security system is weakening and that nuclear deterrence is now the only thing preventing a wider war. Speaking in Moscow at a foreign policy forum, Peskov said the current international situation is becoming more unstable. He said nuclear weapons are still the strongest guarantee against a global conflict, even though they do not stop regional wars. His remarks come as tension remains high between Russia and the West. The last nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the United States expired in February, leaving no replacement agreement in place. Russia has repeatedly defended its nuclear policy as a way to protect national […]
